DVD copy question...

Having loved this movie on an old, tattered VHS copy, I recently purchashed it on Ebay. The seller claimed it was an "uncut European release" that contains material not on the Vestron VHS version with a picture quality of "B-, the best available for the import version." I just received it, and it would appear to be a direct DVD dub of a really crappy VHS version. It is subtitled in Greek, with no way to turn the subtitles off...no menus, no features AT ALL, and a case that has a picture of Ms. Kitaen that doesn't appear in the movie! The DVD itself simply contains the title on it.

So did I buy a pirated version? The pic quality of my VHS version is better, so I thank God I only paid twelve bucks for it. If it IS indeed an illegal pirated copy, is the real deal available somewhere? Just curious due to my Tawny fixation...

You can get it in Japan. Try Yesasia.com or cdjapan.co.jp

Sadly it's out of print in Japan. Word of warning though. On the site it lists the audio as Japanese and the subtitles are only in Japanese. There isn't any indication of English audio or subtitling at all.

Cool cover art though.

My answer is - send it back & demand a full refund!. If you look at Ebay rules it states clearly that all sales of home recorded material are illegal, so you're on solid ground. If they refuse to pay you back, report them to Ebay and they'll be banned from trading!.
Thre is a mint japanese version available, but it's expensive & has no english subtitles.

It sounds like I bought the same DVD from the same guy. My copy played once and then mysteriously erased itself. The guy wouldn't respond to my requests for replacement.

If the read side of the disc is a purple color than yes for sure its a boot leg. But there are some boot legs that are factory pressed and are silver in color.

Possibly this is old news, but the USA Best Buy chain has an R rated version on DVD in their stores for $15.99 that is obviously a factory release. And, if Best Buy has it, most likely so do Circuit City and Fry's Electronics (www.outpost.com).

Since you mentioned eBay, there are unrated director's cuts listed by more than a few different dealers, in both auctions and stores for under $20.

I hate to see someone/anyone get a funky copy from eBay; makes you wonder what you will actually get for your money, even from dealers that have over 100 positive feedabck comments...

Many years ago, I happened to find an unrated VHS copy, and I wonder how it compares to the DVD unrated version. Any info from anyone?

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask...
