Unrated DVD

Does anyone know if the unrated director's cut and the R-rated version will be available seperately or are they together in a special edition that has both?

reply

I just got the R rated version at Best Buy. No uncut version on it.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the War Room!

reply

best buy only has the r rated version with the indiana jones like cover. i had to go to another retailer (silver platters) which carrys an more extensive dvd collection to get the unrated version which is about 18 minutes longer and has a more risque cover (front and back). definitely worth it. i love the music and the corny over the top (dubbed) dialogue. a guilty pleasure and cult classic.

What is different about the unrated version?

reply

does the unrated version also have the english dubbing or will I have to get the r rated version? I am no opponent of subtitles, but I'm not going to sit there and read subtitles for a cheese flick

reply

The unrated version's in english too. Make sure you get that one, the difference in running time is substantial.

cool, thanks a lot!

ps

are the added scenes worth the added price? I'll get it anyway, I'm just curious/impatient

reply

Yes, in my humble opinion, it's like a different film altogether. Mind you, the footage isn't explicit (it's not porn, for Godssake), but I feel it retains the original intentions of the director. The missing footage is close to 18 minutes in total, so that's significant. In addition, the sound on the unrated disc is Dolby 5.1 English or French (as opposed to the rated which is only 2.0 English). Finally, the unrated has audio commentary from director Just Jaeckin! It's a cool commentary. Although it's sometimes hard to understand through his thick French accent, Jaeckin really enjoys this film and has some funny stories to tell. Yeah, buy the unrated but don't spend too much (Deep Discount DVD has it for less than $20).

Well I am somewhat confused about the different versions. I purchased the "unrated" version from Nucleus Films in the U.K., which runs at 100 min. PAL, which I guess makes it around 105 min. NTSC. However I don't see one bit of footage that wasn't in my old VHS copy. I am guessing the unrated rule only applies in the UK as maybe it was heavily censored there. Can anyone clear this up, or maybe describe whatr the difference is? It would be much appreciated as I do love this film.

reply

Sure, your Nucleus DVD is the unrated cut that played everywhere EXCEPT the U.S. They only released this version in Europe because that's the only one that's ever existed there. It's only in censorship-happy America that we get the unrated AND cut version. It's really a shame too. Quite a few retailers here will only stock the edited atrocity. The region 2 edition has the same running time as the region 1 unrated (however, the video transfer is superior on the region 1). Hope this poorly-written explanation is sufficient. Cheers!

Hi
I am in UK and just got a copy of the uncut version, with extras. THere are only one or two more clips, which are however worth the while I guess. There is also this listing of what was originally taken out by the censors - not sure why they provide this - assume they did not like being censored and want to make a point.

"I am no opponent of subtitles, but I'm not going to sit there and read subtitles for a cheese flick."

Most of the actors seem to be speaking English. The French dialogue looks and sounds dubbed more than the English. Often with low-budget foreign films, they have actors from different countries speaking multiple languages. They dub it later so it matches. Examples: Cemetery Man and Dario Argento films.

The dialogue is only half dubbed, I think. Tawny Kitaen and Brent Huff are both speaking English. The bad acting is their own. The second girl is French and her voice may be dubbed to English. Or she could just be speaking phonetically. Any way, half the actors are probably dubbed, one way or the other. This is done for many low-budget foreign movies, like Dario Argento or Cemetery Man. The cast is speaking different languages, and they dub it later to match.

Amazon has the UNRATED Widescreen DVD, so does Virgin Records. It is a real DVD not a pirated one. I paid $30, but it is on sale for about $22 now. I would have paid $100 as I have been looking for it for years and it has so much more content than the VHS version I saw in the 80s. The fight to the death scene has another fight scene before the one with the butterfly wing shields. Don't want to say what happens unless someone asks, but its hot.
