For those who have seen all 1984 Best Picture Oscar Nominees

How do you rank the 5 films?

As for me:

5. Places in the Heart
4. A Soldier's Story
3. The Killing Fields
2. A Passage to India
1. Amadeus

1984 ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA.

#1 Amadeus (call me bandwagon but there you have it)
#2 Passage to India
#3 A Soldier's Story
#4 Places in the Heart
#5 Killing Fields

reply

#1 Amadeus
#2 A Passage To India
#3 The Killing Fields
#4 A Soldiers Story
#5 Places In The Heart

However, I would replace 'A Soldiers Story' with 'The Karate Kid' and 'Places In The Heart' with 'This Is Spinal Tap' as my 5 Best Picture Nominees for 84' - 'Amadeus' deservedly won though.

1. Amadeus - in my view, nothing short of a masterpiece.
2. A Passage to India - good cinematography and acting, but Lean not at his top
3. The Killing Fields - although a worthy topic, didn't work well cinematically
4. A Soldier's Story - good play, important topic, execution as film flawed
5. Places in the Heart - I didn't like you; I didn't really like you! (Talk about unadulterated sentimentalism and schmaltz - YEECH)

Side note to d2tgsd - Fanny and Alexander was from the previous year, and it WAS nominated for Best Picture (winning best foreign language film) and Bergman was nominated for best director. Personally I think it was much better then the winning film, Terms of Endearment, but the Academy Awards clearly are meant for English language films (the occasional best picture nomination for a non-English language film should be seen as high praise, but those films never have a chance of winning.)

Fanny & Alexander wasn't nominated for Best Picture, the other four were The Dresser, The Big Chill, The Right Stuff and Tender Mercies. The Winner was Terms Of Endearment.

Have yet to see A Soldier's Story.

Amadeus is the only great best picture winner of that dismal decade. A wonderful, thrilling, very funny movie. A Passage to India is very good indeed with fine acting, the side only let down by the embarassing Alec Guinness. The Killing Fields is well acted and crafted, but somehow has always failed to grab me on an emotional level as it should, and I detest the sentimental use of John Lennon at the end. Places in the Heart is OK at best - how it managed it's oscar successes is baffling.
