Judy Davis is phenomenal...

1 of the most sensual and nuanced performances ever... Can't believe she wasn't handed that Oscar, and robbed of a nomination @ the Globes... And as a movie, this 1 is my favorite from the 1984 Awards, definitely over Amadeus (another 10/10 from that year), losing only 2 Once Upon a Time in America... What a grand finale 4 David Lean!

Great in Naked Lunch, which is where I first heard of her.

and My Brilliant Career.

I agree. Anything she does is phenomenal.

"Passage to India" ranks right up there with "Dr. Zhivago" and "Lawrence of Arabia" with its gorgeous, breathtaking cinematography. Some movies are just beautiful to watch visually.

She reminds me of Princess Diana, with that way of peeking at everything as if from under the brim of a hat at a garden party.

She was so wonderful that I remember wishing she and the doctor could somehow have become friends despite the trial.

Nobody but nobody has mentioned the great work done by Victor...Dr. Aziz...its appears these great Indian actors..and there are quite a few out there..never get a mention...

Although she put in a good performance, her being chosen for the part was all wrong. The book portrays Miss Quested as a rather plain and unattractive girl. Even Lean's script reflects the text of the book by remarking how Aziz is prettier than her. Yet here we find the stunning Davis with her perfect profile and pouty lips, trying to look dull and average. Didn't work. Neither did Guiness' portrayal of Godboley: a wise, mystical figure reduced to a Peter Sellers stand-in. Not the description of either character Forster describes in the novel.

I wouldn't say she was stunning but with that girlish figure, she had a different kind of loveliness. An elusive beauty.

She is reminiscent of Jeanne Moreau, is she not? They have similar mouths.

She was very charming in this movie. A delicate young woman and ladylike. I like the way her lips curled a bit when she talks, and also large and lovely eyes too. Judy Davis did an excellent job portraying the beautiful society maiden.

I also love her performance in My Brilliant Career. That was her first role. Check it out if you haven't.

Sounds dangerous. Count me in.

Ms. Davis absolutely smolders in everything she's done. One of my favorite actors.

She was very good but I was even more impressed by Peggy Ashcroft that gave an absolutely flawless and superbly nuanced performance (and I believe she had the same screen time as Davis but got an oscar for supporting actress? ).

Anyway, what an extraordinarily beautiful film ! 1984 was quite a year, wasn't it?!
