REM: Not on DVD sound track.

Having had the movie on VHS for nearly 15 years I couldn’t wait to grab hold of the DVD version. I practically know the movie line for line, so it came as quite a shock to discover that two scenes have had the song Radio Free Europe removed from them.

The thing is I feel that these scenes work better without that song, especially the scene in the sex shop, it works better as there’s deathly silence as Pondo makes a fool of himself as the proprietors look on.

Still a great movie after all these years though.

What scenes were they? I've had the vhs forever and I could never find REM in the film anywhere. the sex shop scene never had any music on my copy. I'm glad to finally know that I wasn't just losing my marbles.

The sex shop scene and the male stripper scene, the song could've just been added to the old UK EV release though.

I have two tapes released by different companies. Both have Roman Gods by The Flesh Tones playing during the stripper scene and Everybody's Happy Nowadays by Buzzcocks plays as Pondo enters the sex R us, but then quickly dies so only the mechanic humming of the security camera can be heard. This is the same as the DVD. To be honest, watching that stripper scene I can't think of any song that would fit better. MGM did a great job, making sure all the original music was included as far as I know.

I know that Radio Free Europe shows up in the credits but I have never been able to make it out in any of my copies. What version do you have. I have two different versions of the red case release. I never watched one of the "legs" covers, like the one they decided to stick with for the DVD release.

This is the version I've got:

LOL thats a good one. I saw a marque poster with that image on it. It was being sold by a store in the UK.

I have both the US version on beta and never could find the REM song, even though it is listed in the credits...

reply

REM are deffently on the uk ev video from 1983 in the scenes mentioned above

reply

It is one of the greatest mysteries of the world, i have owned this movie since 1986 and i have never found REM anywhere, although Radio Free Europe has always been listed in the ending credits.

reply

apparently, it was in the theatrical release during the sex shop, but they took it out for all video releases.

reply

it was during the sex shop scene and the male stripper scene.

I had this movie copied on VHS circa '87-'88 and the sex shop scene was always silent -- agreed with the OP that it's hard to imagine with music there. It works really well with that surveillance camera-type background silence.
