1) at the end when the girls were singing their song and everything suddenly goes black, was there a nuclear attack on Sydney ?
2) Did Australia have any kind of civil defense plans such as evecautions or in place fallout shelters or protect/survive or the emergency brodcast system for offical news infromation and instructions
1) I always wonder about that. I think the fact the power went out, leads me to believe Sydney got hit but a nuke. Or it could have been some low flying aircrafts, maybe a russian bomber getting shot of the sky?
Grove, what did you think about the scene full of surviors (somewhere north of New York.) Nothing in Threads or Day After can hit home like that one... so very erie.

The ending would suggest that Sydney was indeed hit by a nuclear weapon as Martin Place Station went totally dark and there was no indication of power being restored. The God-Almighty Bang kind of gave things away too.
One thing I've never been able to get is what Eva says when she cries when she is telling Sharon, Sam and Brendan about the TV footage.
Brendan says Ä lot of people would have been praying where you saw those pictures coming from?
Eva replies Stop talking like that. Then she says It's people...then I think she says who've got to go. Or something like that.
