the preciptating factor ?

what was the crisis the started the nuclear war in ONS ? A movie that can EASILY hold it's own with Threads, The Day After or Testament

Wow! A new message about this movie!!!!

ONS is one my favorite movies of all time. With that said, there really isn't much to be learned about what started world war III in ONS. The war appearently broke out in Centeral Europe and the conflict spread from there. From that one SHOCKING news cast scene showing survivors somewhere in New York, we know that the US was hit with nukes too. Sam, the US Sailor, said early on in the movie that "the wholce US Navy knew for months" that a war was going to happen. Why - is anyone's guess. As that fighter pilot in Red Dawn once said "two biggest kids on the block, sooner of later they're going to fight."

Hope we can discuss more syonack!

Fantastic to see some fresh posts on here about one of my fave films of all time, I actually ended up buying a fresh copy off Ebay as the one I had taped off TV had worn out over time

There were a number of Australian based targets hit early on so I'd be assuming the Soviets fired first but I'll rewatch it again and listen to the news bits early on to see if I find anything new

lol. I wish this film would come out on DVD. I can play my old worn vhs tape, but it comes out shakey on my 52" HD tv.

Be sure to tune back in soon ajay05. I always wondered, at the end of the movie, was that a nuke we hear blowing up Sydney? I like to think it wasn't, rather the echo of low flying fighter jets and what not. I mean if a nuke did detonate above them, even far below in the subway they would have some debris and dust fall on 'em.

I'd be interested in a DVD version as well, I've got the US release and the local Australian release (one has different music when they are fleeing the Opera House to go to the Underground)but both have seen decent use (actually have them both backed up to hard drive nowadays to preserve them)

I think it is a nuke at the end and you're right about the debris and dust, etc

IIRC Martin Place station is in the CBD so a direct hit would have taken out the station, unless the nuke was aimed at the Garden Island Naval base at Potts Point as I think this was missed in the original attacks

ah shucks, so it may have very well been a nuke. That's the power of this film, because, at the end, you really wish the four main characters make it throught without having suffer through a nuclear war. Since Sidny likely got nuked, it's kind of sad to think what happened to them after that last scene.

It's interesting watching this film. I have lived in Sydney for 14 years.

Martin Place Station isn't particularly deep underground.

I am also wondering why the Russians targeted somewhere near Jervis Bay.

Great to see a new post in here

I'm thinking the Russian's meant to target the Jervis Bay Naval base and airport (given the presence of US naval vessels in Sydney earlier in the movie) and this device landed a little off target
