Question about the opening *SPOILERS*

Who is the guy who shoots eve and beats up fat moe? I saw the 229 minute version, is there something im missing? Also i know it's off topic and probably pointless but when the older noodles watches the cars full of rich drunks drive past him at the end what does this represent?

reply

The rich drunks are in a car that looks as though it was made in the 1920s, and the sounds they are making are exactly the same sounds you can hear at the beginning of the movie, when Eve is preparing to enter her apartment. In other words, even though it is 1968, they are anachronistically celebrating the end of Prohibition. That is because the part of the movie that takes place in 1968 is the product of Noodles’ opium dream at the end of Prohibition, and so past and present are mixed up.

reply

No, it's not an opium dream. How could Noodles have known about 1968 technology, like the television, or modern cars, or a car rental place?

reply

That is an excellent point. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that myself. I guess the anachronism with the revelers is just one of those things put into a movie to get a surreal effect that has no rational explanation. After all, the movie is a foreign film.

reply

Maybe Max reminds him of the "better times", like in the 30's, when he was a very rich and powerful man. That may be why the truck passes by.

reply

Maybe so. I am definitely open to other interpretations now. In any event, I edited my review, acknowledging the objection you raised, without quite giving up the dream interpretation completely.
