Bothered with the soundtrack

I first watched the movie today, there are many scenes with great impact still after 30 years but what bothered me the most was the music all over, too melodramatic, old-fashioned and redundant for a movie like this.

reply

The music was brilliant in my opinion and one of the absolute best aspects of the film.

reply

I completely agree. The soundtrack enhances this great movie just that much more. I searched out the Japanese expanded edition and enjoy it on my iPod. The music conjures up so much thought and emotion, it helps me pass the day when driving for work to reflect on different aspects of the movie. Quite simply, it's compellingly MOVING!

reply

I agree with the OP. A main theme is meant to be used sparingly otherwise, like everything else in the world, it loses effect after so many times. In this film it's everywhere. Gets repetitive and boring and detracts from the movie.

reply

totally disagree with the original poster and I agree with Jimmyr. MY all time favorite soundtrack. Brilliant! Enhances the movie and help makes it the classic that it is.

reply

One of Morricone's finest. I think the OP's right, it does seem a bit repetitive at times but it's a haunting reminder of friendship, loss & regret.

ARRET! C'est ici l'empire de la mort!

reply

OP must be high, soundtrack was great, one of Morricone's finest along with The Lone Wolf McQuade.

reply

The music works beautifully with the film and also works as a piece of music on it's own. One of Morricone's best.

"Perhaps he's wondering why someone would SHOOT a man before throwing him out of a plane..."

reply

I'm afraid that LONE WOLF McQUADE was composed by Francesco De Masi, not Morricone.

On the other hand, Morricone's score for ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA is an absolute masterpiece (just like the other soundtracks he wrote for Leone's films), one of the best soundtracks of the eighties.

reply

I agree, it's the same in Leone's other films too.

Once upon a time in the west - Jill's theme is beautiful but after the 10th time you get sick of it.

Good the bad and the ugly - the same theme is played over and over.

reply

And this is why some people don't deserve ears.

reply

This is one of the best soundtracks of all time. Actually either #1 or #2 in my book, competing with Morricone's absolutely heavenly made "The Mission".

reply

The music is great and fits the film. I'd just finished watching The Untouchables before moving onto this, another film that has a Leone soundtrack and THAT has a bad soundtrack. It all sounds like something from a Disney movie and is completely out of place.
