How come Noodles never knew Max had become the governator Baley?

How come Noodles never knew Max had become the senator Baley, even after he appearing on the newspapers and stuff? And did that ex girlfriend knew he was alive?

And were the gangsters that killed Eve and wanted to kill Noodles at Max's command?

reply

It was Secretary Bailey not Senator Bailey and one of my friends in New York has said that normally many people wouldn't know the Secretary of Commerce. Max got others to appear on TV for him and may have tried not to have pictures of him published in newspapers etc.

It is something the writers may have recognized however since in some of the original scripts he was described as a Senator and possibly it's not scaled down enough.

If the 'ex girlfriend' is Carol, she thought Max had died in a shootout in 1933 during the gang's last job.

As a result of Noodles' betrayal to the cops, people associated with the mob have died and a shipment of booze has been lost. At the time the mob had several bosses any of whom could have ordered a hit on Noodles. It wasn't Max - he didn't want Noodles to die.

Thanks a lot. I saw the extended version on the theater but I was a bit confused.

I thought that Max's picture had appeared on the newspapers since it was a very famous case in the media and Noodles even said to know about the past of Secretary Bailey (from newspapers) but what you said makes sense. I also thought that it was Max who ordered his killing and Eve's death but what you said makes more sense. So can we say that Max's plan was to influence Noodle's betrayal to the police so that he could fake his death, steal the money and start over?

So we can say that the only person from his past that knew about Bailey being Max was Deborah, right?

Yes

For Max's plan to succeed the less people who knew about it the better.

Obviously at some point after he had gone West and married a wealthy woman, he re-established his involvement with the mob (the scene in the extended version between Bailey and Jimmy in Bailey's study provides further details).

Jimmy and some of the mob knew about Bailey's true identity.

reply

You're right. It still doesn't seem logic to me that he had the affair with Deborah. It was very careless of him and unnecessary.

reply

it was part of his betrayal of Noodles - "I took you money, I took your girl".
That said he must have only taken up with Deborah nearly 20 years after initially disappearing so he was clearly going for the "long game"! Even more implausible (if you buy that the 1968 scenes are real and not Noodles' opium fantasy) is that Moe hadn't met or seen a picture of his sister's partner at least once during this time - I know he said he "hadn't seen her in years" but still.

Fantastic Movie, There is a posibility that Max had been influenced by Carol. When the old fat man that wanted the diamonds present her to the guys, he says: Be careful with her. very carefull (or something like that).

it's governor there's no such word as governator And it's Bailey. How old are you anyway?

No need to be salty. English is not my first language. I live in Portugal and I'm 26. Thanks for pointing out my mistake.

There is also a time issue.

Max probably didn’t become an important public figure until decades later. If he was the Secretary of Commerce in 1968, he probably didn’t become a public figure until 1961, at the earliest.

That’s almost 30 years after Max’s fake death. Noodles memory of Max was probably blurry (it is unlikely he had any pictures of him as well). Plus, Max had changed his hair style and started using glasses. He even spoke differently; lower voice and slower delivery.

And, of course, Noodles thought Max was dead. He would consciously, or subconsciously, rule out the possibility that Max and Baley are the same person.

reply

He was using the traditional Superman camouflage: the eyeglasses.

Because this movie has a ScoobyDo plot.

Noodles KNEW Max was alive, a) his body was the only one where the face was destroyed b) the money was gone

Max sold out to Frankie and the Unions when he got west and made the rest of his fortune in Trucking, UNTIL he became Sec of Transportation he probably kept his identity pretty secret

Noodles THEN knew what he'd been doing, BUT even though Max set him up for the fall, he was still his best friend and didn't try to contact him

Bailey searched out Noodles
