Bitch

The character "Karen" is such a bitch to Lonnie in this movie, and, not to mention, straight up trash!

I realize Lonnie sought out a friendship with Karen as a way to escape her mundane Upper East Side existence with an emotionally distant mother, but why would Lonnie look up to rough-around-the-edges Karen as a role model? There is not one thing redeeming about Karen. Never did she demonstrate an iota of loyalty and friendship that Lonnie did. Her manners were ill at best and her brother even assaulted Lonnie and threatened to "do much worse".

In the end, even though Lonnie is a dynamic character who broadened her world and learned some life lessons, Karen remained static. Karen is little more than a user and ultimately an abuser without any regard for the feelings of others. Karen did not show any interest in cultivating a friendship with Lonnie other than for the possibility of enlisting another henchman in her shoplifting schemes. Are we really supposed to cheer on this friendship?

I think not.

Karen's bark is worse than her bite. When she's nervous she talks tough, like a lot of kids.

"Good" kids often look up to "bad" kids - or at least they did back then. This movie is 25 years old now, so things could be different. I was a teen in the 70's and hung out with a girl you would probably consider trash. I had an overprotective mother and was very naive. My friend's mother had her when she was 15. My friend's mom smoked and worked in a factory, while mine never smoked, cussed, or drank and worked in an office. My friend was a bit wild - had sex
at a very early age and even a couple of abortions before they were legal in our state. I loved going over there because it was so different than my home. She loved coming to my house because she liked my mother as she was so different than hers. She liked the 'normalcy' of my home I guess.

It was very similar to the movie, except we lived in a rural area. Also, I went to church and she didn't. Remember, in the movie Karen when to church and Lonnie never did. The biggest difference is my friend was nice, but she had a friend who was mean like Karen.

So now, many many years later we are still in touch. I have a good education and a great career. She has 2 children with different fathers, has never been married, has been in and out of rehab, doesn't work, and currently lives with her mother. Unfortunately she just could never get it together, but she's still very sweet.

I still have fond memories of going to her house when I was young. Watching this movie reminds me of my situation.

At first Lonnie took Karen's crap, but the longer they stayed friends Lonnie toughened up. I think Karen figured that out when Lonnie slapped the piss out of her on the street.

PLUG IT UP! PLUG IT UP! PLUG IT UP!
