A beautiful young woman questions her life, looks elsewhere, then tries- unsuccessfully- to resume that life. Somehow Eric Rohmer makes this interesting. I've never understood why I like Rohmer's movies, but every one I've seen has held my attention.

I completely agree. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about the films of Rohmer, but they hold my attention completely.
shareYou nailed it. Same for me! Rohmer had a genius for making something fascinating out of almost nothing. All you need is the faith to stay with one of his movies long enough for it to get under your skin.
shareThe older I get, the more I like his films. At age twenty I saw almost all of them and enjoyed them in a detached, film-nerd sort of way, but felt the characters were pathetic... now I empathize. He captures the shifting ground, loneliness and desperation of impending middle age better than anyone.
