Eric Rohmer's masterpiece

Every element is perfect, the story bulls-eyes a truth about relationships. and the script has a perfect symmetry. Even the cheesy French pop music is great and somehow appropriate.

It does hit the spot now, don't it? It's up there with La Collectionneuse, Maud, A Summer's Tale, and Love in the Afternoon. Those are the ultimate Rohmers for me (so far), and---wait, Aviator's Wife is in there too. This guy is GOOD. In most of his movies there aren't wrong notes; they don't feel scripted. It's life itself unfurling for the camera in its midst. I didn't know a Frenchman, of all people, could be so unpretentious, so direct, and yet so delicate. Bravo to you, Rohmer. You've hugely enriched things.
