Freddy phasing through the jail bars

How did they do this effect exactly? I know it was two shots; one with Freddy and no bars and another with bars and no Freddy, then the two shots were combined.

But how is there a phasing point in three dimensions where he "clips" through? It's got to be pretty basic blue-screen technology, given it's a low-budget movie from '84, but I just can't figure that part out.

They used a hand painted animated mask to select which shot was visible.
