How is this one considered a classic or the best?

All the sequels are better.

reply

The sequels are cheesy. I like all of them, nostalgia probably, but the first is the only straight up horror movie in the franchise.

reply

Nonsense. To me its the least horror one. Just the second one is way more tense and other ones play between humour and horror which makes it much more intense than the first.

reply

You should watch it.

reply

I have, plenty.

reply

That is the dumbest comment I've ever heard, you must be trolling lol.
You may be the only person in existance who believes this...

reply

He is trolling. The first film, its concept and execution are ten fold on part 2 which is a rush job cash in on the popularity of the first film.

Part 2 was most probably a script pulled out of the garbage and they added in Freddy at the end.

He is barely in it.

"its seqwills arr betta!!"

Does that mean 4,5,6? which gradually get worse in film making, directing, acting and story telling?

reply

All the sequels?

Even the second one, A Wet Dream On Elm Street? Or Freddy's Dead (For Really Real This Time)?

This one may have some patchy points, usually in terms of the acting. But the script itself is the best of the entire series. And the special effects, considering how much of a budget they were on, was very impressive.

Some of the sequels were okay, some weren't. But this is the best one.

Also, this one has Heather Langenkamp. So it wins.

reply

Heather is in other ones too and in the other ones I like her more too.
Also other ones had bigger budgets.

reply

>Also other ones had bigger budgets.

Bigger budgets equal better films.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 had a bigger budget than the original.

= better.

At least Leather face was in Texas part 3, Freedy was barely in Nightmare 2 even though you claim its far superior film making and story telling.

reply

I didnt say that but just meant it added to the special effects, promotion, cast and quality. In this case anyway.

I dont think he was barely in it. And part of the reason it was so good was because it was so tense and when he did show up he definitely made his mark.

reply

The cast weren't any better really. The script was worse by far and the film making is of a lower standard by far.

Wes Craven was a very competent horror director, horror writer and came up with great concepts.

Jack Sholder was a TV director mainly. Writer David Chaskin had a very short career.

It seemed like the script was unrelated to the nightmare series and in a rush to cash in on the success of Nightmare it was pulled out of the trash and they quickly changed the demonic possession antagonist to Freddy.

Its not like I hate the film, I like all of the Nightmare series, had seen them all as a child in the 80s. Recently from horror podcasts I had heard they were all bad and a chore to get through apart from 3 but after I rewatched them years later I enjoyed 2,3,4,5, New Nightmare and less so 6 being the lowest point and Part 3 being the highest point after the original

In fact they were more enjoyable than the pretty lacklustre (in my opinion) Halloween sequels after part 3.

But there is no way any of them are better horror film making than Nightmare on Elm Street 1984.

There is a resurgence of popularity with Part 2, mainly based on how wacky it is with the gay subtext and a nostalgia trip.

But....there is a reason why 1984 Nightmare is considered classic horror and Nightmare 2 is not, only to be considered a fun little amusement from the mid 80's.

Theres a reason why part 3 is remembered most fondly and 4,5 and 6 are not.

reply

I liked the cast. A huge reason I like the sequels and why shouldnt they be paid handsomely. Nightmare was a big shit at the time. I liked the scripts as well. More of a balance of horror, humour, and action while the original was trying more on the horror side.
I never liked much of Craven’s writing.
He also seemed to obsessive without actual talent.
Dont know who would say that in a Podcast. If anything they seemed to have a lot of fun. I’d love to start in a Freddy Movie.

Part 3 is pretty good no doubt about it. I found 4 to be extremely similar which I liked and competitively.

Halloween, after the fifth they were all pretty much all garbage. Every last one of them. And I’ve regretfully watched most in the theatre. Even the third one is pretty good in its own right. The first is a true classic and way better than Nightmare. It’s a shame the franchise went downhill from there.

How is the the second one wacky at all or popular because of the perceived gay subtext? I think that’s just people projecting. Because if you really watch it. There is no gay pretext. Jesse was being over taken By Freddy and Jesse liked Lisa. The rest is just made up by the homoerotic community.

The first one is only considered a classic because it was the first one and it was created by Wes. If it werent for all the sequels I doubt it wouldve had such a strong following or had such popularity or horror impact. The first one is kinda boring.

Part 2 isnt amusing or fun. To me is what truly defines his status a horror villian. Part two is very intense and psychological.

Part three story is pretty good and it has a bunch of good actors. I think part of the reason it leaves such an imprint is because it starts the turn of making him psychological and humorous.

reply

Because it's a classic, and is the best movie in the series.

reply

Some of the sequels are good but not better....I think you're going way overboard with that claim.

reply

I agree. The best Freddy is Scary Terry in Rick and Morty.

reply

All the sequels are better.
No they arnt
They may have more gore n shit , or better effects , or even a better story but they dont have ...

Originality.
The original idea "this ghost can kill you in your sleep" was scary , it was a level beyond other ghost horrors and other slasher horrors , combining the 2 and making you think it could be real / possible . almost.

No sequel had that becasuse it wasnt a new idea anymore , just freddy killing people in different ways , with ever more cheesy jokes.

reply

Okay at least you accept the premise of what I tried to say.
But adding to what your saying. A lot of movies switched the stories so much that they were original in their own way going away from the ghost slasher.

reply

I could have come up with the basic idea of a dream killer in Kindergarten.

reply

Is this a joke?

reply

No!
