I saw the movie for the first time this evening on TCM but tuned in after Hobbs is with Iris. Had they known each other before? Was the boy Hobbs' son? Is that what the letter said?

Yes,yes and yes. Iris was his sweetheart back home before he was called up to the major leagues.
