Does Max ever remember Hobbs ?

After their initial meeting 16 years before when Robert Duval's character met with Roy Hobbs (Redford),He states have we met? Yet no where else in the film does Max Mercy remember that day when Roy Hobbs struck out The Whammer..
( Joe Don Baker) .I was just Waiting for that scene to happen , especially when Hobbs took the mound and struck the player with three quick balls.

Yes he does. There's a scene where he's talking to Hobbs, showing him the picture he drew for the paper when Hobbs struck out the Whammer and also stated that Hobb's former agent, or whomever he was, died before he could give Max the scoop on Hobbs.

"How'd ya know my name was Mac?" - Mac

reply

The point when he remembers him is when Roy throws a pitch from the mound and it sticks in the backstop.

When you steal from Peter and give to Paul, you will always have the support of Paul.

reply

Correct. It's this scene that puts Max onto Roy's identity and from there obtains the photo and subsequently mentions to Iris he knew the scout, Sam.

The responders get it right. When Max sees Roy throw a pitch that sticks to the backstop, it triggers his memory of seeing him strike out the Whammer 16 years earlier.

Not everyone has a perfect or an excellent memory. Max probably remembers the Whammer getting struck out by some 20-year-old, but has probably forgotten the kid's name and that it was Roy--especially since Roy didn't make it to the majors until 16 years later.

When Roy finally gets to the majors, he makes his mark as a hitter, not a pitcher, so Max doesn't recall him being the kid who struck out the Whammer until he sees Roy throw that pitch.

Good thing Max kept his cartoon.

But it seems like the shooting happens in the same town and to me it seems like an event like a twenty year old kid getting shot by a crazy woman would stick in your mind. Especially the same kid that had just struck out the Wammer with three pitches.

reply

That's very true.

I don't recall newspaper clippings of Roy's shooting being produced, only police photos. So it's possible it might not have made the papers or overshadowed by another big event. (Remember how 9/11 knocked Gary Condit/Chandra Levy off the news in 2001?)

Or Max moved on to another assignment and may not have heard it was Roy who was shot. Harriet was targeting other athletes as well, not just baseball players.

reply

It wasn't a big story because Roy was unknown in Chicago; he was just a nobody. I'm surprised Max never read the newspaper that day of the shooting.

reply

max even claims he has a 'terrific memory'!

"But it seems like the shooting happens in the same town"

The shooting happened in Chicago and Roy ended up playing in New York.

After a while he does, which is kind of ridiculous because Hobbs clearly remembers him immediately, even though Max had a mustache then and now doesn't.

There are many things in the movie that strain credulity, but Max taking a while to remember Roy is not one of them.

Roy was a completely unknown aspiring baseball player when Max met him on the train as a teen.
16 years had passed.
Roy was a fireballing pitcher when Max met him, and is now a prodigious slugger.
It was finally when Roy throws a seemingly impossibly fast pitch after practice one day, and moreso Max sitting in the stands and seeing Roy on the mound, that finally makes everything click for Max.

And as for Roy remembering Max immediately:
Mercy was a well-known national sportwriter at the time.
Max ridiculed Roy and his 'agent' multiple times in public.
16 years later, Max is still a sportswriter.
