what happened at the end?

I have an old copy on vhs and unfortunatly the end of the video is fuzzy and distorted. Got up to roger moore entering a grave yard and him announcing that he was leaving his job.
Can anyone help me with what happened after that?

From what I remember he was at the Grave yard chatting to a lady who was a close friend of his & also knew the the person/ victim being buried at the cemetery that day who was if I remember killed by the Mob.

While the two of them walked there way out of the graveyard chatting, a sniper bullet hits & kills the woman. Roger Moore turns around & shouts "You Bastards!!"

This obviously gives him a clear message that his problems are far from over & the Mob are still out to get him. At this point the film ends..

The woman getting killed was Ann Blake (Anne Archers character) who tried getting help in the beginning of the movie. She told about her husbands businesses with the mobsters and therefor got killed. She was what they use to call a snitcher. Powerful ending. Not the happy Hollywood-crap we where used to. Good movie by the way and great score from Michael J Lewis who also wrote the score for the animated 1979-version of Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The "chase-theme" is the same in the two movies.

Never saw the movie but read the book. If that's how the movie ended they completely changed the books ending! In it Moore's character is beaten to a pulp and almost killed by Ann Blake's husband and his goons...but the police arrive just in the nick of time to save him. Also Ann is NOT killed and it's suggested that her and the doctor will become lovers. That's a typical Hollywood ending--I'm just surprised they had the guts to change it.

They do beat him to a pulp and the cops arrive at the last second to save him. At his wife's grave the mobster's wife apologizes for the danger she him in and as they walk off to get a cup of coffee, implying a further relationship a sniper shot (recalling the sniper watching Judd at the beginning of the movie at the cemetery) rings out and kills her. Judd cries out "bastards!". What happens next, if he is still a target or even shot in the next moment is left unanswered as the credits roll. It seems more likely Judd lives as the wife is the one who "broke the code" and killing her in front of him sends a pretty clear message. Her death matches up with the code her husband spoke of and seems a likely vendetta killing. We also know he didn't have any information from their sessions and since he's not in witness protection it is likely there was nothing more he can/would testify about except for what the cops saw with their own eyes. But as stated, it is unclear what happens next and is up to the viewer.
