Stunning film
Victorian mood realistic, performances deeply empathetic, beautifully drawn - especially from Mel Gibson. I dont know why its not seen or talked about as much as it should be.

shareI loved it. My only complaint is that it is so dark, that it's difficult to tell what's going on. It suddenly becomes a radio program.
"a malcontent who knows how to spell"
It was certainly very dark for the first three-fourths, but I guess that's what we should expect in a prison. The film opened up considerably in the last half-hour, and I found the escape scenes positively mesmerizing. Diane Keaton inhabited the character of Mrs. Soffel perfectly. Mark Isham's score and that wonderful poem were beautiful touches. This is an excellent film that deserves to be better known. 9/10 stars from me.
