Now taking pre-orders at Warner Archive!

With little fanfare, WB have announced a DVD release of MIKE'S MURDER, as part of their internet-only Warner Archive label. As such, it will only be shipped to U.S. buyers, and will be a no-frills release, but it will be 16x9. Sadly, I suspect this will be the standard re-edit that's always been available and not the actual director's cut Bridges prepared before test screenings went bad. With any luck, perhaps this will sell enough copies for WB to consider doing a proper restoration.

I just ordered this DVD from WB Archives. I would also like a remastered version of this excellent and underrated film (also the original backwards chronology would be interesting to see), but at least we now have it on DVD after all these years!

And are these archive titles not just DVD-Rs? I am happy to make do with my VHS copy.

The releases for titles like this is now almost non-existent. Three or four years ago, I could've seen it getting a proper release with the full cut. But not now. SMH.

Warner Brothers is a bunch of greedy scumbags with their "Archives" releases...

The only, ONLY good thing about them is that some of the quirkier movies (like this one) in their collection are finally getting a DVD release...

And that's it. Here's a brief listing of what's F-upped about these:

> There making no efforts at all to restore any of these films, offer alternate versions or director's cuts, include any extras at all (maybe the trailer, if it happens to be easy to find, otherwise forget it), or in some cases, even the proper ratio of the film.

> These titles can ONLY be purchased through their website. None of them are sold wholesale to any retailer, so on many DVD search sites you won't even get a listing that one of these films is available on DVD because Warners is the only people who sell them. Warners also prohibits use of these for rental purposes by companies like NetFlix and Blockbuster--I know this for a fact because I got a reply from NetFlix explaining why they can't carry some of these films.

> The price. Good god, if all this wasn't enough, Warners actually has the gall to charge 20 DOLLARS for each single film in these Archives. For that damn price, you should practically be getting a Blu-Ray of the movie. Also, with a price that high, is anyone except people who have already seen the film and want a copy in their DVD collection actually going to take a chance and spend that amount to buy a film they've never seen before? I'll take a chance on a film I haven't seen before if it costs me under $10, but $20?!

Many of these films show up semi-frequently on Turner Classic movies. My advice is save the cash you might spend on a half-dozen of these and buy yourself a DVD-recorder for home use and make your own copy of these--with HD you'll get exactly the same quality you would if you threw a double sawbuck at Warners to buy one of these shoddy, lazy, cash-sucking, insulting DVD releases.

Has anyone seen the DVD of Mike's Murder?

Is it widescreen? Is the print quality ok?

reply

I have the Warner Archives version and while it certainly isn't remastered, I would say the picture quality is OK. I don't think it's in widescreen either. Since this is likely the only DVD version we'll ever see I appreciate it being available but would much rather have a director's cut of this film with extras. It's funny because the only extra on this Archives version is the original trailer and you really see a lot of snippets of scenes in the trailer that do not appear in the final film, makes you wonder what a true director's cut would look like!
