It was filmed in my hometown

This entire movie was filmed in Brownsville, Pennsylvania about four years before I was born. Its a small, kind of deserted town that has since fallen into poverty.

Occasionally, when we see a Robert Mitchum movie, my relatives will talk about it.

Right up the street here in West Brownsville was a house that they filmed in. My aunt got a photo of her, my cousin (he was two) and Keith Carradine. They all said that Nastassja Kinski was kind of a bitch in general, and most of the people around here didn't like her. They said she'd demand nobody talk to her even after shooting was finished. Robert Mitchum was also pretty cold to the town, but he was also not in the greatest health.

Overall, everybody loved John Savage. Between shoots, he'd come over to take pictures and talk to people. A very down-to-earth guy. But he had a blister on his lip and some of the crew joked that he got it from the hookers that occupied Downtown Brownsville back in the late-70s and early 80s.

Likely any bartender in Brownsville there at the time would remember Mitchum. He would always head for the local bar after shooting and drink for hours, telling stories...sometimes all night, and always be okay in the morning.

I've had filming done near me as well and most actors don't talk and sign for the public.
Mitchum is known for saying lots of stuff. I don't think he necessarily means it in a hostile way. Very talented guy but seemed too hung up on being Mitchum for his own good.

In the case of Brownsvillem Mitchum is spot on. I have never seen a more depressing place.
There is one saving grace for Brownsville. It has a gun shop/internet cafe run out of a synagouge. That is freaking awesome.

yes it is a very economically depressed town now--but when the movie was filmed there, it was still an operating town. It died in the late 70s when the coal mines started to close and the mall in Uniontown knocked the hell out of it.

As far as it having a synagogue--it does not. We had one Jewish family in town and they would go to Uniontown to worship. We have catholic and methodist churches

My deepest sympathies to you all. I had the misfortune of living in that area because of a job for several years. I have traveled the world-over and southwestern PA is the most depressing place I have ever been. An absolute sheet-hole. The post-apocalyptic film The Road was filmed in the area for good reason. The coal and gas companies have raped the landscape. While there were many wonderful people in the area, a good many more were clearly inbred, hateful bigots. I could not wait to get out of there.
