Name of the university

I know this was filmed in Memphis, but the school credited is "Northwestern University". It looks more like Rhodes or Christian Brothers. Can someone tell me for sure?

reply

it's Rhodes

reply

Yes, Rhodes is correct. But the school's name changed to Rhodes in 1984. Up until the middle of 1984, the school was called Southwestern University.

This is a very Collegiate Gothic / Tudor style campus, and although I have never been a student there, the student body, faculty, staff, and campus, are all extremely first rate.

The school is definitely an urban campus (in midtown, a historic area) but in a woodsy, bucollic setting with a viable arts community. Memphis has a lot of crime, however, intersperced throughout the city so there is a fence around it and access can sometimes be tricky.

I've been through this whole book and there isn't one chapter on farting.

filmed in Memphis.., and I always thought it was filmed either in Canada somewhere, or in Connecticut/Maine area. Possibly upstate New York.

reply

Memphis it is, since Palmer and Muffy had a motel room on Elvis Presley Boulevard.

Well, yes -- kinda outa place in Memphis.

Until the past five years ago or so, Midtown Memphis, TN had a viable arts community, lots of trees, and the Rhodes campus fit in. It's a very Collegiate Gothic / Tudor style campus.

I'd like to reiterate, however, that this is DEFINITALY Rhodes college in Memphis, and was called Southwestern at Memphis until 1984. This movie was filmed in 1982, at Southwestern (now Rhodes) at Memphis. It DOES look a lot like Canada or upstate New York, and as I said, Rhodes college does EVERYTHING first rate -- its most menial employees are polite, respectful, and helpful, the students hold doors open, everyone is polite, freindly and helpful while still being very Ivy League and upper class. The campus has less than 2,000 students probably more like 1300.

In real life, the setting has come under attack by those claiming to speak for non-whites who somehow feel their culture is not represented on the campus. In truth, Rhodes is a VERY involved, socially active school, its students volunteering 100s of hours in tutoring and mentoring throughout the city. A lot of neighborhood centers get a lot of helpful volunteers out of Rhodes -- and yes, it is a very WASP-y type school

There is no way a Rhodes student could possibly live on Elvis Presley Boulevard, however -- it would be a long commute, - it's not as bad now as it was, but Elvis Presley Boulevard is Carjack Alley. Memphis is one of the most violent cities in the U.S. and the crime on Elvis Presley boulivard is horrendous, though not as bad as it was in the 1980s and '90s.

I'm just backing this up...

It's definitely Rhodes. I went there, and knew several people who were in the movie. It's really a gorgeous campus, even though the campus game was to watch the movie and spot which were sets and which were actual buildings. :)

And I can also attest to the volunteering -- my internship my senior year was for one of them, and I did a lot of driving around the city gathering information on it all.

Yes, this was filmed at Rhodes College in Memphis. I was a student there 1970-74, and the scene where "Dr Mueller" (played by Rhodes Professor Ray Hill) is lecturing is the same room in which my inorganic chemistry class was held.

What I do not get is why did they not film it in Illinois then because Northwestern is a Illinois Universtiy.

it says Southwestern in the credits. Isn't Northwestern in Chicago or somewhere in the Midwest?
