Why didn't Harmony Gold adapt this for the Robotech Movie

Back in 1985, Harmony Gold attempted to make a Robotech movie by combining parts of the anime "Megazone 23" and Southern Cross (the "Robotech Masters" segment of the Robotech TV series).

What I don't get is why didn't HG adapt "Do You Remember Love?" as the Robotech Movie? Surely it would have been much easier to do a retelling of the "Macross" segment of Robotech, rather than trying to shoehorn yet another unrelated series into the Robotech concept, not to mention yet again combining two unrelated titles.

Studio Nue probably didnt give Tatsunoko the rights to distribute the title. Same thing happened with Macross II and Macross Plus, I believe. Those two were released through a separate company, in the United States.

It should be noted as well that in the US at that time, there weren't really movie versions of TV series that are quite common in Anime. More likely there are movie sequels to TV series, such as the movies of 'Transformers' and 'G.I. Joe', or else they somehow fit into the continuity of the series. So even if 'Macross DYRL' was available to Harmony Gold chances are they wouldn't have picked it up because it doesn't fit into the continuity of the series, it is its own continuity.

I did read that the producers of 'Macross DYRL' handed over distribution of the film to Toho International, who also produced the English dub version to sell overseas. I'm not sure when the dub was produced, but I believe it was either before or during the US screenings of the TV series of 'Robotech'. As Toho were handling the international release, Harmony Gold wouldn't have been able to license it and rework it.

Actually Carl Macek wanted Do you remember love? as "Robotech the movie" but he couldn't get the rights.

reply

Okay that's interesting, well Toho owned the rights and wanted to distribute it themselves so Carl Macek couldn't get Harmony Gold to get it. It would have been interesting to see how it would have been done, especially with the issue of 'Protoculture' in the separate Macross and Robotech continuities.

I like ROBOTECH: THE MOVIE. Megazone 23 footage was great.

I asked the guys who are distributing the Macross TV series, and they said the feature film rights are tied up in some legal limbo. Apparently no one can get them for some strange reason without the other parties relinquishing some other rights.

reply

Yes, RIGHT NOW the Macross franchise is tied up with some legal issues. Back in 1985, though, it wasn't.

Seems like the same troubles with releasing a DVD of ROBOTECH: THE MOVIE.
