best anime movie i've ever seen, anything similar?

I've been watching this movie since it came out in 84, i'm soon 30!.

And to my dismay i've NEVER seen anything in anime that came close to this movie.

I'm talking about animation, actors, music, overal the entire movie experience.

What sets this movie apart is that it feels like a REAL cinema movie, excep that it's animated.

I love CGI when it's used right (cameron, jackson etc) but most of the anime we see today is using too much eye candy and less story in my opinion.

Granted I'm not watching anime on a regularly basis, but is there anything similar to this movie?

I bought Macross 2 and it was *beep* horrible, terrible animation and it felt like the target audience was for kids.

Should I watch robotech? I've seen a trailer on youtube and it seems like robotech might be too "childish" compared to this movie?

Fans, what say you?

Thanks

I agree %100, I would say they spent a lot of money on this movie, hence the quality and how high they raised the bar with this one.

Everything is 3D nowadays so a lot of the animation is cheaper but it is no match for hand made animation.

On a more subjective level, the story the movie portrays is awesome and unique. I have always thought that since I was a kid and now that I am a grown up, the whole Macross idea reveals itself as a very clever one: In an event of alien invasion we humans would be wiped out instantly...unless we already had some alien technology to fight back. That simple thought is brilliant, so even if a movie with a very nice quality animation ever came out, it would have to match Macross' story or bring something better on the table, which I think is nearly impossible.

I still think this beats a lot of contemporary offerings in terms of story. The presentation is a little stilted. The artistry is underscored by plot and story. More drawings could have helped keep this film interesting to newer audiences. Right now it's on the verge of nostalgia appeal for those of us who saw the show in its first iteration. And I have to admit now that my friends were heavily into the TV show. Not me. I was just extremely impressed with the feature film, and still think it one of the great pieces of anime.

The only "similar" anime in 1984 would be "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind".

This era of anime is "special" in the way Star Trek The Original Series or Star Wars the Original Trilogy is "special"-- in that there is an OVERALL conception or theme which the story or series was CONCERNED about expressing....

OTOH, most Japanese anime or American Sci-fi-- simply as a matter of business/economics-- is more worried about giving their target audience the necessary/expected "kicks/eyecandy".

If you care enough to go around telling people you don't care... you obviously care.

I think that's 100% on the money. "Star Wars" as envisioned by George Lucas was initially a reimagining aof the old Flash Gordon seriel that he grew up with. Only when the people at King Features shot him down by making the rights too expensive, he went back to scratch, and created a magnificent universe that was the "world" of Star Wars.

He had an anti-war, anti-war-machine parable based on people, young men in Skywalker's case, trusting their feelings and going out and doing good. He drew on his film viewing experience, and asked others to chip in to create his vision which went beyond what he originally imagined. Ergo it's magic.

Classic Kirk and Spock Star Trek was more of a conglomerate effort beyond Roddenberry's effort. There actually was an agenda for classic Trek, and Rodenberry was given the mantle, and again what was created was greater than what was envisioned.

Macross is very much the same thing. Naussica and the Valley of the Wind. Princess Mononoke, and a few others. There was more than just hitting the target audience. There was real film making there. Real thoughts. Real emotions. Real art.

Try "Venus Wars".

Really late to the discussion, but try out 'Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Space_Force:_The_Wings_of_Honn%C3%AAamise). Always been one of my go to suggestions.

The quality of animation of the Macross tv series is not nearly as good as in DYRL but it’s still excellent by the standards of tv animation and it tells the story of DYRL over many dozens of hours. So, if you really liked DYRL, you’ll probably find a lot to like in the tv version. However, I would recommend you try to pick up Animeigo’s translation of the Macross tv series on DVD rather than Harmony Gold’s Robotech. It’s out of print now but you can still pick up a used boxed set on ebay.com. It’ll cost you a pretty penny but you can turn around and sell it on to another fan/collector for about as much as you paid for it.

Even if you you (or anyone else reading) should decide to go with the Robotech option, I’d recommend they check out Animeigo’s excellent liner notes: https://archive.animeigo.com/liner/out-print/macross-tv-series.html.
