Clash of the Bionoids from DYRL

Of course, COTBs is the shortened, English version of "Do You Remember Love," but the question is that why IS it shortened? I can't find a copy of DYRL anywhere and I really want to get it. I have an old VHS copy of COTBs when "Just for Kids" released it. I'm a little disappointed with it, because the "Do you remember love" song sequence is horribly cut and edited (most likely for violence) and the ending is kinda weak (is Hikaru dead or not? You don't see him after Boldoza's ship explodes). What is your guys opinion? Should they release DYRL in America on DVD?

I emailed Animeigo about this very thing (they distribute the "Macross" TV series propper on DVD). According to the email I received the rights to the motion picture are "horribly tangled" -such that- "nobody can get them."

This may be reading too much into the response, but from what I understand several companies own the rights to foreign distribution (foreign to Japan that is), but under different titles. Animeigo is one of them. I think the other is either Bandai or Harmony Gold (one may be owned by the other, but I forget at this time), who marketd the series under the "Robotech" title some twenty years ago when it hit the States and elsewhere.

However, if you want, you can try these links;

I know Amazon allows customers to purchase from their overseas stores, but I don't know about Japan.

yes they should but they won't

normally I don't approve of this but I actually picked up a copy from http://www.valkyrie-exchange.com/video-books/DVD-DYRL_PerfectEdition.html that is fantastic quality. Worth the try

It states that the DVD includes period commercials for DYRL. Just to confirm, are these set up as extras?

"Roma Victor!"

Well it's over a year later but what the hell.

They cut up DYRL into Clash of the Bionoids so they could market it to the kids audience who are familiar with Robotech. I haven't seen the CotB version is years but yes, Hikaru is alive and in the regular version he even confirms he's returning. Not sure why they'd cut that out. I don't think they even show you what became of Max in the Bionoids version either.

There was a version released on VHS by BEST Video just called Macross. It's almost completely uncut. The main difference being they removed all the vocals from the credits sequence and removed the Minmei concert that plays during said credits sequence(No Idea why since they left the DYRL song alone). The dub is horrid though, and only semi-accurate as well. It's much better than Bionoids but ultimately it's best to track down a HK bootleg dvd or R2 release(Neither of which are hard to find).

I understand that this was dubbed in Hong Kong as material for Japanese students learning english - hence the crapness of it.

By the sounds of things the US version of COTB has even more cuts than the UK version.

I threw the dubbed version in the bin, but still have a VHS copy of DYRL licking around.

I got my copy of DYRL straight from ebay. you be suprise how many ppl sell it for just 15 bucks. got mine for 10 bucks :) ....mine is prolly not legit but it works and it has english subtitles

plus, mine is uncut w/ english and chinese subs. dont buy the shortened cuz most likely, they cut out the bad stuff like ppl gettn dicapitated or minmay taking a shower naked and prolly lil things.

I bought the DYRL Perfect Ed DVD format from valkyrie-exchange awhile back and video quality is excellent, uncensored with English subs (I believe they are sold-out at the moment).
I remember renting COTB at Block-Buster went I was a younger and always wondered about Hikaru, glad DYRL clears things up.

I've never seen Clash of the Bionoids or DYRL. I have the Hong Kong version by Best West, and the dialogue is quite laughable. But at least it's not censored.

Also, I think that since this is considered a "fictional account" of the original Macross events, the voice acting (in this version) seems to drive that home.

Just pick up a bootleg, that seems to be the only option.

Years back I used to work for the wife of the guy who produced the American version of the Macross feature film. I don't know why he did what he did, but he was a real snobbish jerk, and perpetually kept anime titles (notably the ones depicting young girls with adult bodies) around his desk. I'll let you figure that one out by yourselves.

Truth is this man didn't give a rat's backside about the product. He had money, wanted to make himself something in the "entertainment" industry, and so delved into importing and butchering Japanese animation feature films and TV series. He and his wife opened, ran and drove a studio into bankruptcy with their poor management, and when I saw the "Clash of the Bionoids" release I wasn't a bit surprised at the quality.

He owns the rights to the importation of the film for the United States, while two other companies own seperate contracts to distribute two distinct seperate takes on the TV series upon which this film is based.

I'll also add that said couple has since vanished because, last I heard, the woman I used to work for owed her publicist a lot of money, and tracking down said couple has become problematic for that reason. Thus making a new contract deal for a rerelease of this film in the U.S. a dicey proposition.

Had I the sense and courage back then as a young man I would've told this jerk off, but I feared for my job.

Ah well. Maybe someday.

I wouldn't mind seeing the CLASH version, even if it is shortened. I'd like to see a dubbed version, plus I'm a little curious about it. Saw some clips on YouTube, but the whole dubbed version is not on there.

I have both. A friend gave me a copy of CLASH OF THE BIONOIDS (poor picture quality , it may have been a 2nd or 3rd-generation copy of a copy), and I bought SUPERDIMENSIONAL FORTRESS: MACROSS thru Diamond's catalog at my comic-book store when it came out (had to order it months in advance). The MACROSS video is apparently ALMOST identical to DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE?

I'm watching both this week, starting with the edited version. I'm about halfway thru the uncut version now, and at a few points, I've popped one tape out and put the other one in to really compare.

The CLASH version is missing the entire pre-credit sequence showing the Zentraedi andf the idea that they're fighting women. The Minmay concert has the middle of her spoken intro onstage missing, where some fan yells out her name, and she talks about how they left Earth 5 months earlier, and been through a lot of bad things, but it's all over now. This is VERY important to setting up the entire plot, and it's not there in the CLASH version!

The nude scene of Minmay taking a shower, of course, is missing. After Hikaru & Minmay are rescued, it jumps straight from Misa tearing off Hikaru's head ("DO YOU UNDERSTAND?" "UNDERSTOOD!!!!!") to the two of them meeting at the resturant. Which is quite harring. The transition scene of Minmay at home, watching newscasts who are making out that she & Hikaru are involved in a "hot love affair" is missing. Then, during the resturant scene, they go straight from Roy saying "I'll show you the correct way to approach a girl-- just watch Jet Jockey in action!" to the waiter arriving to tell Hikaru he has a phone call. Roy passionately kissing his wife and her saying "You're embarrassing them!" and his reply, "Just IGNORE them!" is missing. His line about "Jet Jockey" is my favorite line in the whole movie, but it's MUCH funnier when the kissing that follows is intact.

Roy's death when the females attack is almost completely missing, as are the close-up shots of the women warriors!

It's hard enough trying to relate, in your mind, the connection and the differences between the movie and the TV series (where EVERYONE's characters are much better-developed), but the CLASH editing was an insult, and in places, made the story almost INCOHERENT.

Is the beer missile still in the uncut version?

I remember watching the scene where Hikaru is in the tunnel and firing off
missiles and I noticed at least one of them was off.

I played back the scene frame by frame and noticed one of the missile was a Coors beer can

I cracked up when I saw that frame.
