Such a wonderful film - Is the English title translation correct?

This, Agony of Fate, and Office Romance are amongst the best films I have ever seen, if you don't like these films, I have feeling a little part of your soul has already died.

One thing, I have seen this referred to as "Love and Pigeons" - as a dove is a female pigeon, I just wanted to check that the title is feminine, which of course would mean "Love and Doves" is correct.

Technically, "golub" is masculine and "golubka" is feminine, so "Love and pigeons" seems correct. At the same time pigeons are annoying birds that crap on monuments while "dove" is an international symbol for purity, peace, beauty — matching the Russian "golub". So "Love and doves" would probably be more appropriate while "Love and pigeons" and still technically correct. Hope this helps a bit.

Apologies for taking nearly three years to thank you for taking the time and effort to reply to my query on the translation of the title. It is fascinating how a translation can be less technically accurate and yet more in keeping with the title theme. Personally, I think Love & Doves is the better title, but it is good to know that both are 'correct', contingent on the meaning conveyed.

I am just about to re-watch the film, as the classic Soviet era comedy/dramas just get better and better with repeat viewing.

Anyway, thanks again, or should I say, spasibo! (about the limit of my Russian!)

I love this conversation spanning years :) By the way, do you know this movie? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073179/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2
It is a Soviet (and now, to some extent, Russian) tradition to watch this movie on New Year's eve (which is more important to Russians than Christmas). It's aired on Dec 31 every year since 1976. I've seen it countless times. It's really a big part of the Russian "psyche" and I'm sure there's a version with English subtitles (or maybe even dubbed).
Have a great New Year!

Going back to your original post, I now see that this movie is one of your favorites. I'll think of something else :)
