The Ko-Dan Armada was not a big deal

Hard to believe that with only a little fragile ships those aliens could conquer the galaxy. they were blown up with a blink of an eye and did small damage to the Gunstar.

How about the Starfighters? The entire force has one base whose entire defenses are wired through one console.

The frontier. Imagine having the time and resources to place a protective barrier around an entire section of a galaxy! I imagine the design was something spectacular given the movements in space, the resources, and the manpower to construct. In all likelihood, I imagine it would have taken thousands (probably millions) of years depending upon the distance between the connecting units. Just a thought :)

The entire universe as stated by the ambassador during the briefing.

You'd think there would be more ships than that in the Ko-Dan armada. Kind of like the Malmori armada in Battle Beyond The Stars.

Yeah, the scale is totally off here. 1 Battleship/carrier and 30-40 fighters are invading an entire section of the galaxy? In addition, the Star League can only muster around 20 Gunstars to defend themselves. Given the amount of damage that a single Gunstar (albeit a experimental prototype) inflicts to the the invaders they are extrmely fortunate that their meteor attack destroyed the Gunstar hanger. Had it been a straight up fight I'd put my money on the Gunstars.

We can only assume that there are follow on invasion waves which may back up any succesful breach of the Frontier. Given that the initial invaders were destoyed, we can only assume that the Emperor decides against reinforcing failure.

The final insult is the Frontier itself. It's hard to describe how ridiculously huge this thing must be. Lets assume that the Frontier cordons off or encapsulates around 1/3 of the known Galaxy. Given that the Milky Way Galaxy is around 34 parsecs wide lets assume that the area protected by the Frontier is a sphere with a diameter of around 10 Parsecs. This gives the Frontier a surface area of around 4000 kilo Parsecs squared (a parsec is around 31 trillion kilometers). In the movie it looks like the Frontier shield generators are no more than a few hundred meters apart (there are several shots of the Gunstar flying between them), but lets assume for our calculations that there is one generator per 10000 square kilometers of surface area. That means there must be at least 40 trillion (4 x 10 to the power of 13) generators out there to support the frontier.

To put this further into perspective: if a single shield generator technician managed to repair and service 5000 generators each year (that around 13 generators per day remembering that there is transit time involved) then 8 billion repair techs would be required to maintain and support the frontier. Typically, each in field support tech is backed by at least 5 other people working behind him (in manufacturing, communications, logistics, transport ect..). That means there would be at least 40 billion beings employed full time to maintian the Frontier. That's one hell of an industry to get into. And don't forget this is just maintaining the Frontier in place. It would have required more effort to actually buuild the damnd thing in the first place.

Of course, I suppose the entire operation could be automated and not actually require any manpower to run it.

The movie would have made a lot more sense if it was about the defence of a single planet. But then the multi-racial Star League and the fledgling ace pilot from Earth angles would be difficult to work into the story.

BTW: I love this movie!

It's not that the armada sucks, it's just that Alex is that damn good.
