The music...my God the music...

Does anyone else agree that the reason this film is so good is because of the music? It's so huge and epic and I think it makes the film seem much more grandeur. Despite the fact that some of the effects and characters look admitably silly and dated, the music is still amazing and the theme is unforgettable.

Anyone else agree?

They don't score films quite like this any more . One more reason the 80's ruled.

Excellent score I agree, I loved this movie when I was a kid!

The main theme is hauntingly beautiful, it makes my heartache when I hear it.

Lets not forget it was the big time of JOHN WILLIAMS - and every filmmaker, especially in case of sci-fi and fantasy, wanted his music this way, it should sound like John Williams and Craig Safan succeeded here.

Yes, I am sad, too, that these times are over now...one reason more to enjoy what is left from this great time.
Other great scores resembling the Williams style were "Masters of the Universe" by Bill Conti (1986), "LifeForce" by Henry Mancini and "Clash of the Titans" (1982) By Laurence Rosenthal and the early 80ies scores by James Horner (Krull, Battle beyond the stars)....

My personal favorite is Star Trek The Motion Picture by Jerry Goldsmith. Amazing.

"Live long and suck it, Zachary Quinto!"

reply

That's my favourite movie musical score too, Star Trek The Motion Picture by Jerry Goldsmith. Crazy that you would post that but yeah, it's the best! I love the enormous industrial harp they got to play the theme for of the alien vessel V'Ger, it's bombastically creepy. And the love theme is beautiful. The Next Generation was right to borrow Captain Kirk's theme music as it's title theme, it's utterly heroic!

reply

“Jerry Goldsmith” is synonymous with “amazing.”

And the music in Starfighter is right on the money.

reply

Yeah, the music totally made this movie more than it was. If the score hadn't worked the movie would have come across as really cheesy.

I couldn't agree with you more. The music in 80's movies was spectacular and memorable. Music in movies these days, with rare exceptions, is generic and forgettable. It's a real shame too, because great music can help drive the narrative and touch your emotions as a movie-goer.

The music in The Last Starfighter is amazing!

Craig Safan........FTW!!!

reply

The music is great. It's almost bigger than the rest of the movie.

Kind of looks like Craig Safan peaked with Last Starfighter. Most of his recent credits are TV.

His other peak (if you want to call it that) was with Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, just a couple of years after Starfighter. If you listen to both scores (I also love the Remo score!), you'll definitely notice the similarities. Definitely two of the best "silly" (but great!) scores from the 80's!

reply

Heck, I LOVED the movie theme... one of the best sci-fi/adventure movie themes out there in my honest opinion

very dynamic, very catchy

"Make like a tree and get out of here!"

reply

Yeah, I just picked up the Craig Safan "Duology" of Starfighter & Remo on DVD.
Two of my favorite scores ever!

reply

Funny thing... I could swear that I saw 5 flash files of The Last Starfighter soundtrack. If someone with the Firefox browser and also the Download Helper add-on they could download those onto their computer. Funny...

I'm amazed Craig Safan hasn't been given the opportunity to score more major blockbuster films. His music went a long way in immortalizing The Last Starfighter. It's really hard to score a movie (as you all can imagine) -- but, like John William's scores, his soundtrack for The Last Starfighter is so seemless, you can listen to it on its own and find just as much entertainment.

It was a great boon to the film. I also think that Basil Poledouris' score for Conan The Barbarian is what made that film.

This movie and Krull are my two fave movie scores of all time.

"Punk. Quarterback, Punk."

One of the best scores ever for a movie that wasn't a monster hit in it's time.

They play the Score on XM radio's channel Cinemagic all the time. I was on a 2 hour work trip and listened to it all the way.

I agree, it is a beautiful soundtrack and Craig Safran did so well with this.

As someone has stated, have a listen to his other work on the Reno film. It has very similar elements but goes off in some other directions.

He also did some very basic work for a Scott Bakula kids telemovie called I-Man a couple of years after Starfighter. If you listen to the music in that, you can hear he has lost his mojo but he is trying to keep a classic theme there and has a talent that may not have been given a proper chance.

It is a beautiful soundtrack.
Something has been bugging me, though. Maybe one of you folks will know this. The main title theme sounds incredibly familiar. I know I have heard it elsewhere aside from this movie, and it's bugging me to no end. Anyone know of any other movies this score appeared in?

Hi - As far as I know, it hasn't been used in any other films. Perhaps in a trailer for another movie?

But I think you might be confusing it with the theme to "Remo Williams: The Adventure begins" which sounds quite similar, as both were composed by Craig Safan.

Here's about 20 seconds of the main fanfare to give you a taste.

Or, and this might be a stretch, the theme to "Batttle beyond the stars", one of James Horner's earliest.

Hope that helps at least a little.

It isn't either of them, but I appreciate the effort. HOWEVER, you managed to help me remember a movie I saw a long time ago and could never remember what it was, and it was "Battle Beyond the Stars", so thank you for that! :D

I know this post is over 2 years old, but anyway, I distinctly recall a TV spot for The Pagemaster using this score. I can't find any youtube clip of the commercial, but anyway, hope that helps.

A lot of memorable film scores have their score used in film trailers (Dragonheart and Dragon the Bruce Lee Story are big ones).

I'd like to reply to 3 folks:

Yes, definitely, the film is very good because of the music (as another person said). Even though the effects and characters look silly and dated, you should remember that it was the big breakthrough movie in CG effects, after Tron.

Really hard to score a movie? You hit it right on. In the making of, on the DVD, Craig Safan explained how he didn't have much to work with, visually speaking, and he only had something outrageous, like 5 DAYS to come up with the entire score! Very impressive result!

Ditto!! This is my favorite of all time, followed by Krull, and The Boy Who Could Fly (not ashamed to say).

Couldn't agree more.
