SPOILER - Different ending to book?

I may be wrong here, having read the book decades ago.... But from my memory Kate, the character deleted from the series, was the mother in the book.

With this character gone from the series, the story kept you guessing throughout as to who the mother would be.

Can anyone tell me if this memory is right. Was Kate the mother in the book?
