Why did Lilys accent change to American in the Lace 2?

I was a huge fan of the first series and i just watched a little bit of Lace 2. In the first movie Lily had a mixed european accent. A bit swiss and a bit french because of moving around a lot. But in the parts of Lace 2 that i saw she seemed to have an american accent. It just didnt make any sense at all.
Does anyone know why Pheobe Cates droped the accent? Was she criticized for it or something?

Phoebe Cates said in an interview (video not print) in the first Lace she was playing a part and therefore she used an accent. Also admitted it was a bad accent!

Yes but Pheobe Cates was playing the same part in the second 'Lace' movie. So surely she should have used the same accent in the sequel if she is playing the exact same person.

Unless you mean Lily was playing a part. But even in that case Lily is supposed to have a European accent. It wouldnt make sense for Lily to have an American accent when she doesnt and never has lived in America.

just edited (above) without reading your post. But yes, in the first Lace, Lili was playing up (way UP) her character through the whole film, I think the only time we see her alone and actually herself is right before she gets the call at the end. That still doesn't explain her American accent in Lace 2, but that's all I've got.

I think continuity went out the window after they realised how popular "Lace 1" became and they made the second one, and also realised Lili's accent wasn't very consistent, which Phoebe seemed embarrassed about in that interview. I don't think they cared about the back story, just how the story came together at the end of Lace 2.

Maybe the character had a coach to lose her accent to further her career. For ex., Portia de Rossi had an Australian accent but sought to lose it to advance her career when she came to America

The short answer would be because Phoebe Cates cannot act.
