fight speeds

I watched the movie the other day only the 3 or 4 time I’ve seen it. i was wondering if anyone else thinks the fight scenes might have been sped up. Or are they just ridiculously quick?

reply

not sped up, this is benny and jackie at their prime. they were really moving that ridiculously quick.

reply

yea especially Benny the Jet.

Actually I agree, the fight scenes were probably sped up. As much as I don't want to admit it.

Same with the fight scenes in Woo Ping/Jet Li's 'Fist Of Legend'. Those were sped up too.

Pity that some of what people think are the best fight scenes ever put to film are sped up. I don;t like camera/editing tricks in a fight scene. Pure athleticism is better.

While listening to the Police Story 2 commentary track one of the people said Jackie Chan liked to film some action at 22fps, when the film is played back at 24fps the action looks a bit quicker.

Wikipedia:

"Wheels on Meals was the first of two films which paired star Jackie Chan against former professional kickboxing champion Benny Urquidez (the other being the 1988 film Dragons Forever). Their fight in this film is typically regarded as one of the greatest on-screen martial arts fights ever performed. At one point in the final battle between the pair, a spin-kick performed by Urquidez is so quick that the resulting airflow extinguishes a row of candles. This is shown onscreen, with no cuts or trick photography."

Yes Fist of Legend is CLEARLY sped up(and I'll give props, the end fight is without a doubt the best ever!)

But Wheels on Meals isn't sped up at all, it's pretty obvious to see and considering you've seen FOL if you compare them then you can tell WOM hasn't been sped up. God, look at some of Donnie Yens 90s flicks for speeded up fight scenes, the horrid Iron Monkey 2 springs to mind.

Actually, the fight IS sped up. Not ridiculously so, like some of Donnie's stuff, as you mentioned. But it is sped up.

Jackie and all those guys were absolute masterful filmmakers. They would always use differente techniques to enhance the cinematic vision of their movies. This was basically under-cracking the camera .They mixed different framerates. Its not like pushing the button forward. They would film some stuff with a little lower framerates (lesser than 23,976) , and they when showed they upped it . That's why you have a sense of speeding up.

On wheels on meals specifically i dont know , but i can guarantee you that jackie and bennie moved really really fast.
