bits and pieces

When the younger brother, Shigeyuki, doodles in class he draws roller coasters. What is the significance of the older brother, Shinichi¡¯s, doodling?

I also loved this movie. I hope it gets on IFC someday. I was extremely impressed by the minimalist, theatrical-like angles and environment. Considering this, I was not surprised by the lack of audible music when the mother plays the lp.

I am puzzled by a few scenes:

What is the "dirty joke" inserted into the breakfast scene?

Why does the tutor initiate a food fight at the end of the film? I'm sure it's just a cultural reference I'm not getting.
