Ali's clothes

I love the original Karate Kid movie mostly because it's the one that had the characters of Ali, Johnny, Bobby, etc. Johnny and Bobby are hot, even if they are by jokes. But I feel like they both redeem themselves at the end of the movie. And I love Elisabeth Shue as Ali. She's wonderful! My only problem with her are the clothes she wears. Nothing looks very flattering on her. I know the movie takes place in the 80's and was filmed then too. But I also grew up in the 1980's and was about the same age as Ralph and Elisabeth when that movie came out. I know all about 80's fashions, but Ali's are just very unflattering. Other chaststers in other 80's films dressed better like Cindy in Can't Buy Me Love, etc. I just wonder why Ali dresses in so many unflattering skirt and vest combinations. Oy!

Hey I am watching it now and thought the same thing about her clothes. The knit vest over a polo, ugh I know.

I didn't find her hot.

Most 80's girls didn't look that hot. It was around the mid-90's that girls started baring a lot more and went back to more 70's hair, but then again modesty made a comeback in the mid 2000's

Speak for yourself. Dat one-piece in the beach scene... RAWR

Ali / Elisabeth is naturally very pretty. Even if her clothes made her look a little bland her face smile hair and eyes made her look good no matter what she was wearing

Shue has always been attractive to me, and she's aged really well too. But she was just kind of plain in Karate Kid. Not ugly, but just regular I guess....

reply

natural beauty, well said, she was my first movie crush way back then...

I always thought Shue was kind of pretty (she had GREAT hair!) but she had that '80s 'non-toned' look to her. I found her kind of dumpy, in fact.

Like someone else mentioned, the '80s seldom featured belly-baring, hard-toned abs and such.
The 1990s & 2000s really started that trend.

Lastly, her character was supposed to be the 'goody-goody rich girl', so she dressed kind of preppy.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

Her clothes were on point during that time. She lived in the Valley. She dressed as a vally girl/preppy look. That's how they dressed during the early mid 80's. Plus she is not dumpy like one poster said. She has a hot body. She is athletic and is all muscle. That's not fat. That's muscle and she clear shows her strength during her cheerleading scene.

reply

SHEESH! It's clothing of the time!

I heard the filmmakers actually tried to hide her massive tits under frumpy sweaters because they detracted from her youth and innocence.

reply

That's also what I think. They wanted her to look more girly and innocent.

reply

Nobody with big tits can be innocent. Nobody.

They had to dumb down Elizabeth Shue alittle to keep her from looking too good for Ralph Macchio - even then it was a missmatch, it already looked like he was dating someone near twice his age as he looked like 14 and she looked more like 25.

The thing is Eiizabeth Shue is one those people that looked older then her real age when she was younger and now seems right for her age, when she was young she was always more like a cute girl next door type but not a super hottie.

Her hair is all woolly with heavy bangs and not flat ironed. She wears too many bulky layers for a warm climate. It’s like everyone in the cast is in Southern California but Ali is existing in her own private Alaska all the time. She jumps around gym class too and gets shiny nosed. She has poor taste in friends too. They all make ugly faces all the time. No wonder why the high school boys all go to the dojo so much and motorcycle around with each other. The pickins’ are slim.

Wow! Lmao!
