This would have been so much better with John Belushi

Talk about a missed opportunity. I read that they were going to make this as a sex comedy with Belushi playing a variety of roles from a baby breastfeeding up to an old man. Think this sounds mouthwatering? I do know that Belushi was at possibly his lowest point emotionally before his fatal overdose. I did read he did not want to do this movie but i wonder how much of his mind was influenced by drugs at this point. If things went as the studio planned, it would have been out the winter of 82, which is the same year of another sex comedy which was a megahit,Porkey's. Does anyone out there think this would have made a fortune similar to that film? Does anyone think it could have been as raunchy? Would it be a "don't take your kids to comedy"? Thanks.

I haven't seen Joy of Sex but I have been reading Wired- The Short Life and Fast Times of John Belushi and it went into detail about Belushi's reluctance in doing this film. I am not sure how his career would have turned out. He was sort of an enigma because he let the drugs take such a hold over his life. Same with Chris Farley. Quite tragic.

he didnt want to do this film because he had just finished rewriting a whole movie called noble rot... this would have been amazing with him as would've been ghostbusters, not that it's not already amazing, but sooo much better.

i watched a biography on belushi last night...he said no repeatedly to the film, but the night he overdosed and died, he called the producer of "joy of sex" and had agreed to do the film.....so when he died he had actually agreed to do it....although friends say that it was just cause he was high on drugs or whatever....

I was a punk extra in this movie and we heard that Belushi had agreed to do it but had OD'd before shooting began...It definatly would have been better with him in it; I had fun and got great pay to boot!

Yes this would have been a spectacular movie to watch had John Belushi agreed to do it and did not OD'd on drugs you know! I would have watched it if it had happened that way you know.

I had no idea John was going to be in this. But it's still good.

Yes it is very good movie to watch. Yeah it would have been nice if he did make the movie but he decided to over dose on drugs and that ended his life and career for himself.

He was going to star in Once Upon a Time in America; he'd lost 40 pounds for the role, but the Joy of Sex people kept badgering him -- finally, he gave in, agreeing to do it for the money, but he'd felt like he'd sold out... and so he went on the days-long bender that ended with him dead from a speedball.

This movie literally killed John Belushi.

reply

Well that is not good that he went on a days long bender that ended up killing him. He was a great comedian and actor too. Well his fan Chris Farley followed him and did the exact same thing that killed him as well.

That is shocking to hear that John Belushi turned it down quite a few times.

It's a shame John died, he would've done well like Steve Martin in his later years.

I watched the film again last night, and I have to ask, who would he have played? Was the script completely rewritten from when John was on board? Because he was too old to play a believable teenager (I know, just go with it), and he was probably too big a star for one of the more minor adult roles. Did Christopher Lloyd replace him for the Coach Hindenberg role or something?

I heard the script was rewritten multiple times to entice Balushi.
