I think you are confusing this movie with another strange television event of the 80's: the television series "Otherworld".
The strange colors of the depths of hell are present like you describe, but the houses are exactly like the houses on the surface of the earth. The lead character only visited his house and found his kids trapped by Susan Luchi behind a laser cone like forcefield.
It was in Otherworld where the houses were all new agey and high tech while looking the same as eighties homes.
