WHY does this movie get such a bad wrap?

I watched the entire indy series this year for the first time and was blown away. Despite KOTCS all of these movies were top notch. I've read nasty things about TOD and even read that spielberg only directed LC to apologize for temple. I enjoyed this movie so much. Is there a huge flaw I'm missing?

I will never understand why. To me Raiders and Temple are both top notch. Crystal Skulls was average and forgettable and Last Crusade was flat out embarrassing.

Because people couldn't accept that it wasn't just a rehash of Raiders. Most of them love The Last Crusade because it did the same thing the first film did with nazis, a biblical artifact, etc. but nowhere near as good.

Temple of Doom has always been my favorite because, in addition to being darker and taking more risks, it has the best action/adventure, the best villain, and Indy is easily the most badass and heroic here. Sure Willie and Short around are kind of annoying, but the mine cart chase scene during the climax alone makes up for it.

I'll never understand the hate this movie gets and find it to be very underrated. It's up to par with Raiders and way better than Last Crusade.

Willie is annoying for a good part of the film but she's supposed to be. She comes around in time. I think it's a good performance.

It got tepid reviews on its release, but the movie's reputation has improved over time. For my money it is top-notch entertainment, a great rollercoaster ride.

7.6/ over 80% on RT etc is not a bad rap; it gets its due, with some of the fake outrage still persisting. with how the internet works, it could have been a lot worse..

Temple of Doom is definitely the weakest of the four movies. Indy had the two most annoying sidekicks in any of his movies ( Scott and short round) In this movie I never felt Indy or the other two were in any kind of danger as they were never going to kill off short round. Whereas in Raiders and Last Crusade, Marrion and Connery were in genuine danger I felt.

Thanks for the laugh I needed that.

A bad WRAP ? How about a bad RAP ?

I've never been a huge fan of Temple of Doom, but as I grow older, I tend to enjoy it a bit more.

The problems I always had was I found the film to be too dark. A bit of darkness is fine, but I found it too much. There is a looooong sequence in the middle where the story just grinds completely to a halt while we watch the Thugee partake of their ritual.

Speaking of story, another problem I always had was the lack of much story. While The Last Crusad certainly has character development and plenty of cause and effect, action and consequence, Temple of Doom has very little of either.

What IS the story? Indy is tasked by the people of a poor Indian village to retrieve their sacred stone. He goes to a castle to search for them, then through a series of contrivances, finds himself in the middle of a nasty ritual. He breaks the spell, lots of action things happen, he gets the stone and returns them. That's about it.

Like I say, I appreciate it a bit more as I get older, but I would prefer Raiders or Last Crusade any time, mainly because they both have more story and character on offer.

I never understood people feeling TOD was too dark. Would you rather an Indy film be much more cartoonish and slapsticky like TLC was? I'll take too dark over too cartoony, anyday.

reply

Very simple Neon, parents complained that Temple was too dark and scary for children (even though the franchise was never for children) and Spielberg gave in. Plus family friendly movies sell more tickets.

I wouldn't say it was never not geared at kids but they definitely toned things down way too much in TLC to childish levels.

Yeah, that's why they gave Indy a kid for a sidekick who went all three ninjas on the bad guys, and showed Indy trying to save someone who tried to kill him.

Temple was a dumb, silly movie and an insult to Raiders.
