The Ice split scene

The scene where Dr. Shephard and Charlie are walking across the frozen terrain with the huge separation in the ice floor separating them is an incredible special effect. Does anyone know how this was done?

I've wondered about that too. That was pretty neat.

Just saw this for the first time and was impressed by that shot. It could be a physical effect with a large miniature that was composited in without harsh edges, since the featureless ice might make a blend seamless.

I dunno!

Read this in an cinefex (or similar type) magazine A LoNG time ago, it was an actual physical effect: basically a natural void/trench was found and covered under by about 5 feet down with a wooden tresses ( like a bridge but not bridging the surface between the two end of the void)
It was made in a way that once it had a cable running through the supports they could be quickly pulled apart and snow that was accumulated to fall in
The total length of the trench wasn't that long and cuts just before one would notice and the next scene has Huttons body covering the end of the trench (looking at it I would guess 40 to 50 feet was the total length of the trench and about 10feet wide
