it's been a LONG time since i've seen Ice Pirates, so even though i'm kind of excited that it's coming out on DVD, I decided to rent it 1st from netflix. That way I can know for sure if I really would think it's still funny or was it just because I was 13 years old when I 1st saw it.
I think I was close to the same age when I saw this movie. I remember seeing the ads on TV when I was bout nine and thought it looked like the funniest thing ever, but I was too young to see it in theaters at the time. Years later, I came across it at the video rental store and remembered the ads, so I rented it.
All I recall of the movie itself was waiting for it to get funny, and being thoroughly nonplussed by its plot.
When I first saw this movie, I was 9 years old when it just came out on HBO. I thought the alien restroom scene in the beginning along with the two main characters in the slave showroom dressed in white talking with a high voice were the funniest, but the rest of the movie was sorta weird and grungy and I never got many of the jokes. After 17 years, I found this movie on tape at a pawn shop for $3 and thought "ehhh...what the hell...I might like it...". I decided, for the hell of it, to try this tape - and I LOVED it! While this movie is cheezy, silly and boring in some places, it's overall pretty fun. Since then, I bought all manner of crazy B-movies from that era (1970's - 1980's) and I've really got into a lot of them, like "Midnight Madness", "Real Genius", "The Gate", "Rock and Roll High School" and so on and so on.
You never know, years after you last seen something, what you would like, or dislike, when you see it again. There are also some movies I liked as a kid that, once I see them again lately, I now find boring or even offensive. Go figure...
Just rewatched this on Netflix after not seeing since 1985. It's a great movie. I love the space herpes entendre and the idea of fixing robots to do all your fighting. Great flick.
