The Royal Tenenbauns is 'almost a copy' of this film

O.K I was exagerating , but there are huge similarities.
For all that I know, Wes Anderson didn't ever mention this film.
Could all the similitudes be casual ?
I doubt it.

Could you actually list some of these similarities? Apart from the fact both are based around a family...?

Gonna take a crack at this:

1) Crazy story about an unusual family
2) Brother and sister in love with each other (but, at least Margot Tannenbaum was adopted)
3) Both stories feature the daughter's various sexual partners including a black man, a woman and,the brother's buddy in an ongoing search to find someone to replace the space in her heart that she has for her brother that she's in love with.
4) Daughter smokes
5) Oldest son is an athelete
6) Family traveled to a foreign country
7) Death of a parent (ok,that's a stretch)

Mkay. That's all I've got.

Plus a daughter in each story is a writer (Lilly Berry and Margot Tenenbaum)

you know you are stretching it when the points you make are

*daughter smokes
*parent dies
* crazy family

The Royal Tennenbaums isn't even comparable to this mess of a movie, it is infinitely better.

Oh.

Honestly I haven't seen the movie, but I am in the middle of reading the book, and the "greasiness" as you call it, is more of tragedy and darkness. But the amazing thing is that no matter how far it pushes the limits of disturbing and upsetting you keep reading because of the entrancing style and amazing characters. Point being, that no matter the issue with the content, the form needs to be appreciated. I will probably watch the movie, but am not looking forward to it, as I just don't think that anyone has yet to truly do justice to John Irving book...even though I enjoyed Garp, Cider House, and Door in the Floor, its just not perfect yet.

Comparing this story to Tenenbaums is not fair to either story, as they are quite different slants on a similar dynamic, with different goals. And just a really different sense of humour (no, dark is not a sense of humour).

And really blood relation or not, they grew up as brother and sister...it is still unpleasant.

Before all the Tenenbaums lovers freak out, I have to agree. I sat through Tennebaums, what I found tedious, obvious and more than anything else i was stupefied at what a blatant rip-off it was of both the novel and the film of Hotel New Hampshire. I absolutely do not believe that Wes Anderson, regardless of how you feel about his film, just accidentally bumped all over Irving's story. Come on folks, there are far to many similarities and both films are similar in tone. I just rewatched Hotel and it's even more obvious to me now.

Proof... simply read Irving's novel and see Richardson's film version... that's all you need to do.

I like this film more so...but I like the odd, unconventional, imperfectally dysfunctionally functional families and stories.
