difference on dvd

Why oh why is there so much of the movie missing? Major plot points are gone from the original version! I'm thinking it has something to do with the people who produced it. So angry! I love this movie and just bought this dvd from Canada and they butchered it! grrrrrrrrrrr

OK, I totally know what you are talking about! (BTW: mine was actually different on teh VHS I received) I remember when I used to rent it when I was young, it was produced by FHE (family home entertainment). The "updated" version is done by FFF (Feature films for families or something like that) They cut out at least 3 scenes for sure and I am pretty positive even a few more. The ones that stuck out right away for me were: the boys breathing under the girls bathroom door when Cathy was first going to try out, the second was when she yelled at her Mom's date, the "shifty nelson" thing, and the third was when her and Evelyn got drunk. My husband found this movie for me on Ebay (VHS) a few years ago and gave it to me for a surprise Christmas gift. I was just estatic because it is one of my favorite movies but when I watched it I was a little dissappointed, but just didn't have the heart to tell him. I have yet to find the FHE version of it.....

Oh thank God...I thought I had blown a gasket or something...you know when you read a book and then see the movie...and your head creates scenes from the book that weren't there, so when you see the movie again later you wonder...where the heck is...(insert book scene here). I wonder if there is a term for that. Anyway...glad to hear I'm not the only one.

I wonder of these Family Film Fellows bought the rights to the film and now...this is the only version that will be available. Drat.

reply

It's "The Movie Network" it's only available in Canada.

Ya, I am not in Canada, so that is probably why it was not familiar to me. But thanks anyway!

This was a favorite film of mine growing up too!! That "Family" oriented company that turned the cut copy out should be Shot!! Not to be morbidly hasty or anything but it was terrible how much was missing!! Most of the void footage was pointed out on another post. There was the heavy breathing through the bathroom door at Megan, there was the whole scene with "Shifty Nelson" (lol), the drunken scenes with Evelyn, the "Cut" scene between Spear and his father in the dressing room following Spear getting tossed from the game ( guess the towel getting ripped off his head was a little too Heavy Duty for (Family Home Entertainment)??? GOD? There was the hillarious part when Bill Moss (Mr. Lumber) gives his Annual inspiration speech where he sais " If you work hard and play hard you'll have something they'll never be able to take from you......to which one of the players mutters "HERPIES"...lol Of course thats gone! To this day I have the "origional" version on VHS but now have it PVR'd as of this morning as it was on The Movie Network!! I was extatic when I saw it listed. I didn't know if it would be cut or not but I recorded it anyway and was extatic to find that it wasen't. Now if only CBC would turn out an Un-cut DVD version.....it would be awesome! Oh and while they're at it, they can box set up the Great and " Origional" He Shoots, He Scores TV Series from '86 starring Carl Marotte as Quebec Nationals great Pierre Lambert!! Amazing series! Well, until the simultaneous English/French tapings stopped after Season 3 where it exclusively became "Lance et Compte" in Quebec. DAMN!!!

I had the same reaction. It had been over ten years since the last time I saw it. I still noticed the missing pieces. The dinner scene was completely cut out. There were several scenes that got cut or eliminated entirely. I wonder if the actors, producers, etc. are aware of the changes that were made.

On a more positive note...Yannick Bisson grew up quite nicely.

Found a VHS release of this movie in thrift store and watched it today. It was the Feature Films for Families release and it ran only 69 minutes, even though it said it was 74 minutes.

One thing's for sure, they did a precise Readers Digest-style edit to remove any slightly-offensive content whatsoever to meet their bland as hell criteria.
