Pauline's husband Robert (episode 10 spoilers)

I'm watching episode 10 right now and Maria and Pauline are talking about the box of money Pauline found in her basement that she says Robert must have hidden before the war. Did we ever find out what happened to Robert? I remember seeing him for the last time when he was leaving in a car for somewhere with some gold and silver and Pauline is telling him to be careful. Then nothing later but Pauline agonizing over his disappearance. Did he just disappear like most all the other men in this series? I particularly hate Paul. A most loathsome man to just disappear leaving her with two children, no divorce, no communication. I am shocked the family welcomed him back to Shabbach. I was hoping they would shoot him, or at least run him off like the scoundrel he was.

During the conversation, Pauline mentions Robert hid the money before he was "called up". That likely means he was drafted into the army/volkssturm, and probably died while in service.

Not big on irony are you?

Anyway, the answer to your question is Robert was killed on the Eastern Front, it's mentioned at the start of either the last or penultimate episode.

Irony aside, it was a frustrating watch; here was a man who'd abandoned his family and literally no one told him he was even a bit out of line for it. Not surprising for a small village but really disappointing as a viewer.
And that being said, I think it was a little unbelievable that literally NO ONE even gently said, "that was a bit cruel to Maria and your sons, though, wasn't it, Paul?" Katharina would say literally anything to anyone, and she loved Maria; even though Paul was her son, I'm sure she would know logically that he'd been very unfair to his family. Or Wiegand, for instance – he was like, "I refuse to see Paul till the Americans let Wilfried out of prison!", and it's like, "uh, how about the fact that he ran out on your daughter and your grandsons? You're not holding that against him?" If a member of a small town goes away and becomes a big shot and then returns, it's a fait accompli that everyone will go mad with joy over it – but I think it was a little unrealistic that no remark was made at all. Not even by Maria.

It was mentioned earlier than that, too; as early as episode 7, I think. Before the war was even over, Pauline was saying she could feel he was dead.

"I only ask that you respect my jumper!"

I'm with you on this ... nobody says a word ... treat the guy like he is a hero??? Mother even feels sympathetic to him??? And yes his Father In Law would have killed him.

When Herman visits the graveyard, he moves the plants under Paulines' name on the tombstone (1904-1975,) and under it he finds his Uncle Roberts name, killed on the Eastern Front, 1945.
