Miniseries?!

Why is this referred to as a miniseries? It has eleven episodes, not three or four! That would be respectable for most series. Plus each of them is about an hour long (longer in a few cases)

Because it is a miniseries? A miniseries is a pre-planned production with a limited number of episodes. Sounds like Heimat to me.

Many miniseries have more episodes than this, War and Rememberance and Roots are just 2 examples, there are plenty more.

Sounds like a series to me... and it did run to a couple of other series (Heimat 2 & 3) anyway.

Wikipedia, great.

Sorry, I'm not going to run to it for a definition. How is it NOT a proper full blown series?

It's not "sci-fi", it's SF!

"A miniseries (also mini-series), in a serial storytelling medium, is a production which tells a story in a planned limited number of episodes."

Heimat is therefore a mini-series as at the time of its production there was no plans whatsoever to produce any further episodes. The fact that they did not then make a futher series until 8 and 20 years after the original series means the second Heimat is a second mini-series and Heimat 3 is a third miniseries.
Imdb seems to accept it as such as well so thats good enough for me although the wiki description of Heimat considers it "three series of 30 episodic films" so there's a different definition right there.

Was it not originally a cinema release, in fact? I thought it was shown over four nights in cinemas before its TV broadcast.

By US standards in the mid 80's it is absolutely a mini-series. A series back then was at least 22 episodes long with the expectation that it would be back the following year. Heimat was 11 episodes with no expectation of more.
