This reminds me of Angel's Egg, also from 1985. They're both set in post-apocalyptic worlds, have vague stories that can be interpreted many ways, have references to religious themes, and are slow-paced and overall quiet films.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

You also can try Rene Laloux films, in particularly these: La planete sauvage (1973), Les maitres du temps (1982).Gandahar (1988).
