Robert Towne's Original Script?

I read an article that says Robert Towne (writer of Chinatown, Tequila Sunrise, etc) was supposed to direct this but his previous movie flopped and Hugh Hudson came in and butchered his original story. Towne claimed it was the best thing he ever wrote. Does anyone know the details of Towne's actual script?
