This movie could have made so much more money if they pushed it to a Holidays '84 release
shareTo be fair though what difference would it have made when it was released? It was the mid-eighties, just look at what the competition would’ve been in that year alone, let alone any other in that decade.
shareIt probably would have gotten a better push in the christmas time frame (just looked it up) but man, how epic was the summer of 84 for movies? Ghostbusters, Karate Kid, Gremlins, Muppets in Manhattan and The Never Ending Story. That's an insane lineup
shareYea the studio dropped the ball having this film released at the start of the summer, since the theme of the movie is around Christmas. A mid December release would've fared much better.

I have watched both and OMG this movie is way better is so dark and fun and the design of the Gremlins is so cool This is now my favorite Christmas movie ever.
The fact they are puppets and not CG makes them look cooler the movement is a little unnatural but they are something real that is there ¿how they made the effect of the melting striped? I cant even imagine.
Another movie from that era that I watched this year was Little shop Horror the directors cut those puppets are amazing
They should use more animatronic when they are done right look way better than CG
Not everyone was a 100% sure Ghostbusters was gonna be a gigantic hit back in '84. And there is your answer.
shareOn paper in 1984, following on the heels of E.T. and Raiders, the Steven Spielberg produced film would look like a more surefire thing than a comedy from the stars of Stipes and The Blues Brothers, which were big hits but not quite blockbusters.
And Gremlins was #4 for 1984, way ahead of the #5 (Karate Kid), so I suspect it did as well as it was going to do.
No one knew both movies would become such iconic classics.
