What did they do? A few of them accidentally killed a few people while goofing around. Lock them up for manslaughter/reckless endangerment. It's not an excuse for genocide. They seemed fairly intelligent and responsible for their own actions -- only a few should have gone to jail for more than a few years.

It's a horror comedy, where we're supposed to laugh at the chaos that the Gremlins caused and the extreme ways in which the humans protect themselves. Nobody is suggesting this is a real life situation or solution.
I will politely disagree. Gremlins were the equivalent of rats. They reproduce at an exponential rate and cause chaos wherever they infest. We saw one night, imagine a week of dealing with them reproducing.
