I've heard about a gremlins remake and it's almost official, but I don't know if it will be CGI or not and who of the original cast and crew will be brought back, so please tell me what you know and what you think about remaking gremlins.
I don't care for it to be darker, but I don't want it to be lighter either. I think the original found a good balance. I loved the subtext in consumerism, but I also loved the simple comedy, effective mild-horror, the Christmas ambience, and the small town community that the movie captured. It was a combination of elements that made it work.
I loved the puppetry, so the inevitable cgi angle sounds a little boring, so hopefully the execution can give the story the 'punch' that it deserves if the visual effects can't. I want the FEELS of the original, the diversity in characters, believable family/friend/coworker interaction, and I want the movie to have FUN with the story. I think the worst thing that could happen to this effort is for it to feel generic and forgettable.
Still though, nothing can ever take away from the original.
I think that if they remade it, a lot of the old jokes wouldn't work and the feel would definitely be gone, like the dog scene at the beginning, they wouldn't have the Toto reference and even if they did, it wouldn't make sense. Nor the joke that didn't come to fruition until the bank jerk was in the Santa Clause got a lot of the same jokes thrown at him.
I also liked how sweet the lead (Billy) was and they'd probably replace him with someone super sarcastic.
About the only thing this film has going for it is the creativity of the NON CGI gremlins. It's just idiotic to even think about remaking it. Well I mean other than the fact that it will make a ton of money, which is the only reason they'd remake it, anyway.
