The initial pair of rules are coherent in that they are lucidly formulated and grounded in the biological aspects of the creature. In contrast, the third law finds its foundation in a human construct. Midnight, merely a linguistic tool that aims to help us understand the world better, to make order, make it easier for humans to organize their day from sunrise to sunset. Furthermore, why designate the commencement of a new day precisely at 00:00 and not 23:59, 22:00, or 02:25? Moreover, if the absence of darkness is a non-issue, where does this temporal demarcation stop?
I can understand a rule that said we can't feed them from sunset to sunrise, this can be based loosely on research (it is known, for example, that night affects the mental state of certain people) at least there are clear boundaries - daylight versus darkness. You somehow can justify it.
