Is Godzilla 1985 in the pubic domain???

Some guy on eBay who sells VHS copies/dubs of Godzilla 1985 says that it is ok for him to do so because the film is in the public domain. Could this be true? I don't think so. Some one must hold the U.S. distribution rights.

I think this guy is just a Ripoff artist. His ad say "Mint Condition Tape", but what you get is a medium quality copy.

Can anyone tell me if the film is in the public domain in the U.S. or not?

I would greatly appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

Thank you

I agree, but does anyone have any idea who owns the rights to this film so we might be able to get it released on DVD? Maybe with both the American and Japanese versions?

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?

I wouldn't say "public domain", but I believe you cannot be scrutinized by the law by buying/selling/downloading a movie that is currently "out of print" on U.S. shores. You can get an idea when you go to ANY comic/toy/movie convention and see tons of "unofficial" releases for movies and TV shows that aren't in print in any form currently.

The quality is usually pretty "low" though and not worth the $$ you'd otherwise pay.

I ended up downloading Godzilla '85 (Japanese version...even better) via Torrent several years ago...screw it!
