I have never really heard or read any type of criticism about Godzilla's appearance in this film. I for one love it to death since it is completley appropriate to the tone of the film. And he(in my opinion)actually "looks" terrifying aside from the fact that he can level cities in a matter of hours. I often compare this version to other versions and I never stopped thinking that this is the best. This is the only version of the beast that convinces me that he is truly out to destroy and cause horror on the planet. (Especially the scene when the SuperX is destroyed and Godzilla just stares and growls at the three people before actually going after them...*shivers*) What do u guys think?

I love the design work in this movie. I might be in the minority, but I think Gman looks 10x better in this flick than any of the other flicks form any era.

I agree. After he destroys the super x, the way he stares is so menacing. It is if GZ is saying, "yeah I'm that bad." It kind of bothered me when I was little. The music that is playing at the time just adds so much to the atmosphere.

This is by far my favorite incarnation of Gojira, mostly cause it's the most sinister-looking. The malevolent, psychotic look in the eyes, the big fangs, the way the lips curl back when he roars...really adds up to something very scary-looking.

Oh yeah, this is definitely my favorite Godzilla design. I like how his roar's a little different, too. One thing I noticed is that although he's supposed to be about 60 feet taller than the original Godzilla, he still looks flat out tiny compared to the buildings around him. I've always liked that for some reason.

Me too. It's the original Godzilla's roar (more or less) and I've always preferred it to the one they always use. It makes him seem more menacing.

In this movie G is amazing,especially his "face"...These eyes were truly menacing,and the way he looks around...Brr,he reminds me Jack Nicholson in "Shining" O_O

What's amazing is realizing that just 9 years earlier, Godzilla had that goofy campy look in "Terror of Mechagodzilla"

You guys talk about how Godzilla "stares" at things, but have you noticed that his eyes stay in one spot FOR THE WHOLE MOVIE! HE'S ALWAYS LOOKING UP!

I love the robo zilla too. The animatronic for the close up was amazing how every part of its face moved. like when his lip snarled. I also love how dark this movie looks. the cinematography is amazing.

As a kid this version of Godzilla scared the living *beep* out of me.
The Big G is so menacing in this movie, the overall look&feel of this movie is outstanding. I just watched it again after approx. 20 years now and it still gave me that chilling feeling, especially when he just stares around with his eyes.
Very, very nice approach. Very nice. Love it.

It's a shame it's not on DVD.
This has always been my personal favorite.
I actually Realy loved the Godzilla Suit in GMK.

But The 1985 Suit feels the most realistic, His lips move over his teeth in a way that no other godzilla Movie has, even the Millenium Films dont seem to have as much articulation.

I'd have to agree. Here's a run-down of the evolution of the suit:

GODZILLA and GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN - decent but the head has no personality and overall it just looks a tad too bulky. The face is demonic but cartoonish.

GODZILLA vs. KING KONG - the eyes are a little too big and immobile. It's just too cartoonish and lizard-like.

GODZILLA vs. MOTHRA - best of the old suits. I love the flaps over the eyes.

GHIDRAH to HEDORAH - they made him look like Oscar the Grouch.

SON OF GODZILLA & vs. GIGAN - just awful!

the two MECHAGODZILLA movies - just a standard, no-frills Godzilla suit... a little too nimble, the eyes are too big, and the beak too rounded to look scary.

then with GODZILLA 1984 - AWESOME suit! I have absolutely no complaints. Even the animatronic close-ups really look good and help to sell Godzilla as a living thing. My only complaints with it is that A) it doesn't match the suit-head and B) it is at an awkward angle in a few shots like right before he toasts the two fighter planes. The scene where he roars when the camera swoops over his head when he's first introduced, also looks awkward as his eyes are so big and plastic-looking... but just in that shot.

It seems in all the post-1984 godzilla movies they tried a little too hard to make him either look all buffed out or, after 2000, to look really animal-like. I think it takes away from his "humanity" and makes him a lot less scary (and interesting).

He definitely looked the most sinister and frightening in this installment. I always thought it strange that I was in the minority for liking this film. I still watch my VHS copy from time to time. If you wanna see a really dumb looking godzilla see the Roland Emmerich version, actually don't cause it really sucks. Anyway, he looked great in this movie and as a kid it scared the tar out of me.

It does rank among my "favorite Godzillas", but y'know, from certain angles he looked more like a short-nosed Gorosaurus.
